University of Portsmouth is a dynamic and forward-looking university located on the south coast of England. The University's history dates back to 1908 when it was first established as Portsmouth Municipal College. With a strong reputation for teaching and student satisfaction and notable research strengths, the University aims to provide an excellent student experience focused on knowledge and skills essential for roles in the global workforce.

The University offers foundation degrees, undergraduate, postgraduate and professional development courses across a wide range of disciplines. The courses are structured to extend knowledge and broaden the skills of the students. Members of the academic staff are international experts in their fields.

The University is home to a student community of over 22,700, of which 4,000 are international students from over 140 countries.

At the University of Portsmouth, employability is integrated into every course. The excellent links with industry enable the University to find out directly from employers what skills they want graduates to demonstrate.

The Purple Door Careers and Recruitment centre offers an extensive range of career planning resources. The in-house recruitment agency gives information about voluntary, part-time and graduate roles while their staff support a wide range of events and sessions including CV building, writing effective applications, exploring specific job areas and  regular employer presentations, giving you the opportunity to meet employers directly.

International Student Support

International Student Advisers based at the University offer advice and support to all international students, including visa assistance and police registration. They organise an orientation programme for new students, and offer an airport pick-up service. They also arrange social events and coach trips.

Research

Research at the University of Portsmouth has been rated 'world-class' in the most recent Research Assessment Exercise (RAE) 2008. Centres of international excellence include the Institute of Biomedical and Biomolecular Sciences, the Centre for European and International Studies Research and the Institute of Cosmology and Gravitation.

Sports and Recreation

The University has excellent sporting facilities  that include two sports halls, squash courts, two dance/martial arts studios, a synthetic turf pitch, netball courts and grass pitches for football, rugby and lacrosse. The athletic union has around 50 clubs ranging from mainstream sports such as football, netball, rugby and hockey, tchoukball and skydiving.

Students' Union

The students’ union is committed to increase the opportunities available to students for personal professional development and organises the best student events in the city. It also offers guidance and support on finance, academic and personal problems.
