About University of Portsmouth

Located on England’s south coast, Portsmouth is a vibrant, cosmopolitan city with some of the UK’s best weather. Most university buildings are in the heart of our compact city. Everything you need is close by, including: four miles of beautiful beach, excellent nightlife and entertainment, and the historic castle and dockyard. Portsmouth is one of the UK’s most affordable cities for students (NatWest Student Living Survey 2019) and offers laid-back coastal lifestyle. But the bright lights of London are just 90 minutes away, and ferries cross regularly to France and Spain.

We believe in your potential – and we want to help you thrive in the world. We welcome 4,000 international and EU students from around 150 countries. Because we are always looking to the future. And we know that the future is global.

We have been ranked the 21st university in the UK (Guardian University Guide 2020). We have a five star rating for teaching, employability, internationalisation, facilities and innovation (QS Top University Guide 2018). In 2017, The Economist found Portsmouth to be number one in the UK for boosting graduate salaries. And DLHE 2017 found that 97.5% of Portsmouth graduates were in work or further study within 6 months.

From CV building and writing effective applications, to exploring specific job areas and regular employer presentations, students can receive support on graduate-level roles and part-time work whilst studying.

Research and Innovation

Our research is rooted in the real world, too.In the most recent research assessment exercise (2014), 78% of Portsmouth’s research was rated as world-leading or internationally excellent. Recent breakthroughs include the discovery of a new enzyme that could make single-use plastic recyclable, the development of new lightweight components for vehicle parts made from more sustainable materials, and the use of virtual reality to help prevent burglary and rehabilitate offenders. Many researchers are actively involved in teaching.

Our dedicated Graduate School will help you make the big jump to research and bring out the best in yourself – from a welcoming two-day induction, to a comprehensive programme of workshops and training that helps you develop excellent research skills.

Teaching excellence

We achieved the highest possible rating – Gold – in the Teaching Excellence Framework (TEF). TEF is judged by an independent panel of academics, students and employers. They said we deliver ‘consistently outstanding teaching, learning and outcomes for [our] students.’ And that each is ‘of the highest quality found in the UK.’

Facilities and Services

Portsmouth is proud of its campus and has committed £400m to the next phase of its development, including the opening of a new £53 million sports facility in 2021. Significant investments already made mean you can look forward to excellent modern facilities.
