Marketing identifies, anticipates and satisfies customer needs and is integral to effective business strategy. It fuses psychology, management and consumer behaviour to maximise profit in a global marketplace.

It is highly vocational: you will learn theory in-depth then apply it to the real world through case studies and applied student projects linked to industry.

You will develop the practical skills needed to succeed in this fast-paced industry, and learn practical topics such as:

  • marketing communications
  • strategic marketing

This degree has been approved and accredited by the Chartered Institute of Marketing (CIM) and meets the qualification entry criterion for the CIM's Chartered Postgraduate Diploma in Marketing.

Work placement or study abroad

You can choose to spend a year between your second and third year of study in a 12-month work placement in the UK or overseas, or studying at one of our partner universities abroad.

Study abroad

You can study abroad at one of our partner universities in Europe through the Erasmus exchange scheme. We currently have partners in Denmark, Finland, France, Holland, Norway, Spain and Sweden.

Work placement

You will gain valuable industry experience from taking a 12-month work placement in a UK or overseas business.

The Business School's dedicated Placement Officer and the University's Careers Service will help you find a placement that matches your skills and interests.

We've placed students in a range of companies including: IBM, Disney, Procter & Gamble, Nissan, Marks & Spencer, Unilever, Accenture, Cummins, GSK and Microsoft.

This year placement students are working in roles such as market assistants or assistant brand managers within large multinational corporations. They are undertaking projects including:

  • developing the social media strategy for HP Enterprise Group
  • assisting in the running of events in retail stores for Apple
  • building the new corporate website for Dr. Oetker
  • providing support to the PR team within Barbour
  • forecasting and analysing sales orders for the women's training category of Nike

Vocationally oriented

Vocationally oriented

Our approach is vocationally oriented. We cover theory in depth and then apply it to the real world either by case studies or through applied student projects.

We also have strong links with local, national and international companies to help you gain real-world experience throughout your course.

You'll have the opportunity to take an optional work placement between Stages 2 and 3, and can choose to take part in a team-based Marketing Consultancy Project in your third year. This project gives you the chance to act as a consultant for a real-life company working on a challenge that they are currently experiencing.

Your contact time may involve two lectures per week per module, or one lecture and one seminar per module.
