About Offshore, Subsea and Pipeline Engineering, MSc - at Newcastle University

Our MSc in Offshore, Subsea and Pipeline Engineering will deepen your knowledge, giving you the essential skills required to become a practising engineer in a demanding industry.

About this course

Newcastle University is home to the largest and broadest dedicated marine technology research group in the UK, this means you'll be taught by leaders in their field. You'll also benefit from our cutting-edge facilities.

Our MSc is designed for graduates in:

  • marine technology/engineering
  • offshore engineering
  • naval architecture
  • mechanical engineering
  • related disciplines

You will focus on the fundamentals of offshore, subsea and pipeline engineering and develop knowledge and skills in the following which are critical in the industry:

  • the dynamics of offshore installations
  • advanced structural design
  • marine risers, umbilicals and mooring lines
  • reliability and integrity management of marine systems

Our close industry links ensure you'll engage and network with key engineering companies as part of an enhanced learning journey. Our industrial partners will teach you the key design and manufacturing skills required in the sector. You will also learn about operational methods by site visits to manufacturing facilities. These include:

  • design and manufacture of subsea umbilicals with TechnipFM
  • offshore pipeline and cable laying methods as well as subsea trench operations with Royal IHC
  • teaching of subsea valves with BEL Valves
  • design and manufacture of flexible risers with Baker Hughes

These site visits will enable you to put theory into practice, as well as enhance your industry networks

What you'll learn

You'll develop your knowledge of marine systems and structures (and their operation and maintenance), such as:

  • mooring lines
  • risers
  • subsea umbilicals
  • offshore renewable devices
  • fixed and floating offshore structures

You'll gain an understanding of the key steps of marine structures' life cycle including:

  • design
  • construction
  • installation
  • asset management
  • decommissioning

In addition you'll:

  • learn skills from specialists in pipeline operation and apply these to solve pipeline engineering problems
  • develop advanced skills to predict environmental loads and responses of marine structure
  • extend your commercial awareness and understand the importance of sustainability and its intersection with business
  • learn to deal with real-life hydrodynamic engineering problems

Accreditation

Our course is accredited by the Royal Institution of Naval Architects (RINA) and the Institute of Marine Engineering, Science and Technology (IMarEST) on behalf of the Engineering Council. This means that you are automatically recognised as satisfying the educational requirements leading to Chartered Engineer (CEng) status.

The Royal Institution of Naval Architects is an internationally renowned professional institution whose members are involved at all levels in the design, construction, maintenance and operation of marine vessels and structures. Members of RINA are widely represented in industry, universities and colleges, and maritime organisations in over 90 countries.

IMarEST is the first Institute to bring together marine engineers, scientists and technologists into one international multi-disciplinary professional body.

Our accreditations give you an additional benchmark of quality to your degree, making you more attractive to graduate employers. It can also open the door to higher-level jobs, most of which require Chartered Engineer status.

Delivery

We have a multidisciplinary approach to teaching and you will engage with students across all key marine technology disciplines. This offers a rich and diverse learning experience.

Our teaching covers a broad range of subjects and typically consists of:

  • lectures
  • seminars
  • practical sessions
  • group work
  • personal supervision

Modules are taught by block delivery, allowing you to immerse yourself and understand the subject in more depth.

Our strong industrial engagement means our courses are shaped by industry. You will typically benefit from:

  • industry guest lectures
  • site visits
  • projects
  • placements
  • employment opportunities with added support from our Careers Service
