About Applied Linguistics Research, MA - at Newcastle University

This MA will prepare you for an Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) funded PhD in applied linguistics.

This course provides research training and interdisciplinary insight into the study of applied linguistics. The course follows ESRC postgraduate training guidelines.

Through the course you will:

  • achieve a critical conceptual understanding of practice, thought, evidence and theory
  • gain skills, knowledge and understanding to engage with and evaluate research and theory
  • undertake advanced applied research, contributing to the development of new techniques, ideas or approaches
  • make informed judgements on complex issues in specialist fields, often in the absence of complete data
  • communicate your ideas and conclusions to specialist and non-specialist audiences

You will consolidate your learning through a research project. This might include:

  • a portfolio of critical literature reviews
  • case reports
  • pilot experiments
  • draft journal articles
  • a dissertation

The course is for those accepted onto a 1+3 ESRC funded PhD programme. The course is only available to EU citizens.

Entry requirements

A 2:1 honours degree and a master's degree in subjects related to:

  • languages
  • linguistics
  • education

Acceptance onto a 1+3 Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) funded PhD programme. This is only available to EU citizens.

International Students

To study this course you need to meet our Band 4 English Language requirements:

Direct Entry: IELTS 6.5 overall (with 6.5 in writing and a minimum of 5.5 in all other sub-skills

If you have lower English Language scores, you may be accepted onto a pre-sessional English course. 

Our typical English Language requirements are listed as IELTS scores but we also accept a wide range of English Language tests.

Pre-sessional English Course Requirements

  • 6 week Pre-sessional entry: IELTS 6.0 overall (with 6.5 in writing and a minimum of 5.5 in all other sub-skills)     
  • 10 week Pre-sessional entry: IELTS 6.0 overall (with 6.0 in writing and a minimum of 5.5 in all other sub-skills)
