You study economic theory and policy relating to Britain, Europe and the rest of the world, with topics like:

  • the global economy
  • micro- and macro-economic analysis
  • economic evaluation and investment

You gain the analytical tools, knowledge and quantitative techniques to understand modern economics. You will also be able to identify problems, predict outcomes and evaluate policies.

This degree has real-world relevance and we ensure you develop the quantitative skills valued by employers, enhancing your employability.

This degree is also available with a placement year or with a study abroad year.

Study abroad (optional)

You can study abroad between Stages 2 and 3 through the Erasmus exchange scheme. This extends your degree to four years. 

You'll spend the year studying at one of our partner universities in Europe. We currently have partners in:

  • Denmark
  • Finland
  • France
  • Holland
  • Norway
  • Spain
  • Sweden

Alternatively, you can apply to spend Stage 2 studying economics at the University of Groningen in the Netherlands.

This is a fully integrated study abroad experience, taught in English, which counts directly towards your final degree mark. Places are available on a competitive basis.

This degree is run by Newcastle University Business School, based in our state-of-the-art building within Newcastle's emerging business district. Our Business School's facilities include:

  • 120 PCs across three hi-tech computer clusters

Modules are taught via lectures and seminars.

Assessment methods

Assessment is mainly through unseen examinations at the end of each semester (January and June). A proportion of your marks will also be based on in-course assessment of essays and projects.
