You select from wide-ranging topics in ancient history, ancient culture and archaeology.

You can also study classical languages, with optional Greek or Latin language modules at beginners' or advanced level.

You will engage with different forms of ancient evidence, such as literary texts, inscriptions, and visual and archaeological material, to bring these ancient worlds to life.

You'll also develop research skills to a professional level through our Ancient History portfolio project, equipping you with skills for your future career.

Classical language learning

Classical language learning

We offer highly successful and nationally acclaimed beginners' Language in Action classes for students who wish to learn Greek and/or Latin.

We also offer intermediate and advanced classes for students with previous experience in either language.

Our language classes are not a compulsory part of this degree so will form part of your optional modules at each stage. They allow you to engage in literary study of original Greek and Latin texts from beginners' right up to advanced level.

You will enjoy small class sizes, allowing for a high level of interaction with teaching staff.

During your degree, you will have the chance to take part in extracurricular field trips that take advantage of the North East's rich history such as:

• the nearby World Heritage Site of Hadrian's Wall
• the classically-inspired Belsay Hall
• Wallington Hall

Studying abroad as part of your degree is a fun, challenging experience that will broaden your cultural horizons.

It will increase your employability and help you acquire a range of practical life skills. It's also a chance to improve your language skills and develop an international network of friends.

UK and EU students have the opportunity to take part in a study abroad exchange in either Stage 2 or Stage 3.
