About Microbiology (Biological Sciences), MPhil, PhD - at Newcastle University

Microbiology is a well-funded research area at Newcastle University. This creates a vibrant and dynamic environment for postgraduate study.

In biological sciences, our Applied and Environmental Microbiology group researches:

microbial biology in a range of habitats
discovery of natural products, eg antibiotics
reduction of food spoilage
production of biofuels, bioremediation of polluted environments
pathogens and host-pathogen interactions in a range of diseases. This includes those in plants and coral reefs.

Entry requirements

A 2:1 honours degree or master's degree in a related subject, or international equivalent.

ENGLISH LANGUAGE REQUIREMENTS:

Direct Entry: IELTS 6.5 overall (with a minimum of 5.5 in all sub-skills).

If you have lower English Language scores, you may be accepted onto a Pre-sessional English course.
