About the Sports Science team
Sarah is the course leader for BSc Sport Science and Management. She has an MBA and specialises in finance, leadership and event management. She uses her expertise to deliver modules and lectures in the areas of entrepreneurship, event management, human resource management, finance and economics and leadership.
Chris is a communications expert, who has published a range of literature which is used by students on the course. Chris manages modules in the areas of marketing, strategic analysis and implementation.
Seema has completed her PhD in law. Her area of expertise lies in inclusion and exclusion in sport. She is responsible for delivering the law content on the course, in addition to a number of other management topics. Seema manages the short-term work placements on the course.
This course consistently delivers graduates who can operate straight out the box, who are both eminently employable across a range of industries and with the potential to go on to achieve senior positions.

Introduction to Sport and Exercise Physiology
This module provides the foundations of the key human systems (both anatomical and physiological) and their responses and adaptations to sport and exercise.
Foundations of Sport and Exercise Psychology
Examine the psychological consequences of engaging in sport and exercise, as well as the mental factors that impact on quality sport and exercise experiences.
Sport, Culture and Society: a critical introduction*
Explore the importance of the social sciences in the understanding of sport and in the education of every sports professional.
The Internal Business Environment
You will be introduced to key topics such as managers, teams, organisational culture, structure and communication. You will also study academic models and topics of law.
The External Business Environment
You will explore various academic approaches to management. Focusing on the external influences of business, you will learn to use the PESTEL model to analyse an organisation.
Introduction to Research
Get an overall perspective of the research process in the context of sport, exercise, health and leisure management, and learn the research skills necessary to successfully complete your studies.

Applied Sport and Exercise Physiology
Through both theoretical and practical study you will learn how the body's structures and functions are altered by bouts of physical exercise, and how these concepts can be applied to training.
Practical Applications in Sport and Exercise Psychology
This module introduces the concept of evidence-based practice and frameworks of assessment, intervention and evaluation to
address issues in sport, coaching, social and exercise psychology.
Strategic Business Analysis and Management
This module aims to develop your understanding of strategy and resource management and the role these play in establishing competitive advantage.
You are introduced to essential marketing principles and practices, methods of campaigning communications, whilst also learning the unique nature of sport marketing.
Research Design and Analysis
Using enquiry based learning, students will continue to learn about the research process and gain an understanding and experience of how research is conducted within the field of sport science and management.

Investigate the relationship between sport, exercise, physical activity and health by developing a small research project.
Through a short placement you will learn to apply, analyse and evaluate a range of vocationally relevant processes which will enhance your employability and prepare you for the world of work.

Learn about entrepreneurship, critically evaluate business environments, and develop the knowledge, skills and techniques required to effectively create a start-up company business plan.
You will study methods of creating organisational change and the theories relating to the creation and evaluation of options, stakeholder communications, and the planning and managing of change.
Sport Project and Dissertation
You will produce an original and independent piece of work in a specialist area of sport science, coaching, exercise science or sport and leisure management depending on your focus of study.

Strength, Power and Endurance for Sport and Exercise
This module typically focuses on six topics related to applied exercise physiology and strength and conditioning research.
Advanced Topics in Sport and Exercise Psychology
You will become familiar with selected areas such as motivational climate, athletic identity, mental toughness, psychology of injury and morality in sport. The emphasis of this module will be placed on current primary research.
This module is designed to help you develop your knowledge and skills in all appropriate management functions, to enable you to effectively plan for, develop and manage an event.
Child and Adolescent Growth, Health and Performance
This module will describe and critically evaluate the processes of growth and development in humans, and the potential impact of these on the current (and future) health and performance of the growing child and adolescent.
Contemporary issues in the Sociology of Sport: cross cultural perspectives*
Consider the core sociological questions relating to the distribution of power in society, the nature and effects of social inequality, and the potential role of sports development in social change, as well as considering the meaning of sport in diverse cultural spaces.

From 2012, students on this course will have the option to complete a one year work placements in industry.
