About Food Science and Technology (final year top-up), BSc (Hons) - at Nottingham Trent University (NTU)

This top-up course will provide you with a progression route from the Foundation degree in Food Science
and Technology. You’ll develop the skills and knowledge required for management, advanced supervisory
and product development positions within the food and drink sector.

About this course

Accredited by the Institute of Food Science and Technology (IFST), this course builds on your learning from the FdSc. It examines the biochemical, chemical, physical and biological factors underlying the synthesis and metabolism of food materials You’ll develop knowledge and understanding of the needs of society and industry for sustainable food quality, safety and security of supply.

Your learning will incorporate food processing operations and preservation systems. The course will develop your scientific and technical knowledge and skills, allowing you to help tackle the challenge of producing and manufacturing food for a growing population. You’ll also study the business and regulatory environment in which food businesses operate. Strong emphasis is placed on reinforcing theoretical knowledge with practical, work-based application, utilising food manufacturing pilot plant equipment.

The course is delivered on a day-release basis, one day a week. For the rest of the week you will be expected to work within the food industry (typically three days a week). This means you get to apply your learning directly to your products and workplace. You’ll also undertake independent studies, including working on your coursework.

You will experience a range of learning and teaching methods. As well as traditional lectures and tutorials, you will undertake practical work in our food processing laboratory and chemistry laboratory. Visits to commercial businesses are also arranged.

Your course begins slightly earlier in the academic year than a typical university course and finishes later to ensure that you can complete all the taught sessions required. Industry leaders such as KP Snacks, McCain Foods Ltd and Unilever have recently sponsored students on this course as part of their professional development.

Successful completion of the course will assist your career progression to management levels in an industry that has a real need for Food Science and Technology graduates.
