About Animal Management, BTEC - at Nottingham Trent University (NTU)

This course will teach you animal related topics such as biology, health, behaviour, reproduction and breeding, whilst also developing practical skills for handling and caring. This course is well equipped to help you gain the knowledge and skills needed to pursue an animal related career or further study.

Modules cover areas such as:

  • Animal Nursing

This module will give you an insight into the veterinary profession and the role of a veterinary nurse with practical aspects such as applying bandages and setting up an IV drip.

  • Wildlife Populations and Ecology

Learn about a variety of subjects related to ecosystems and wildlife and their habitats whilst
developing the practical skills needed to measure populations and wildlife habitats.

  • Animal Training

Develop an understanding of how animals learn and then apply this to develop training skills with
different species.

  • Animal Breeding and Genetics

This module will equip you with a basic understanding of different aspects of breeding animals.
Topics include the use of different technologies involved in animal breeding, how to care for animals used for breeding, and an introduction to genetics and how characteristics are inherited.

  • Animal Biology

Gain an understanding of biological principles in different species of animals and develop a
knowledge of the structure and function of cells and tissues and their relationship within the body.

How will I learn?

You’ll learn through a variety of engaging and informative methods such as lectures, group discussion and practical demonstrations.

Throughout the course guest speakers will bring knowledge and experience into your learning by providing an insight into specialist areas of the industry.

A work placement during your course will also enable you to gain real life experience in the industry – you may have the opportunity to work in a sector related area such as a veterinary centre, boarding kennel / cattery or zoo. 

How will I be assessed?

You’ll be assessed through written assignments, oral presentations and class tests.

What’s next?

After successful completion of the course you could progress onto a Higher Education course at NTU such as our FdSc Animal Science, BSc (Hons) Animal Biology, BSc (Hons) Zoo Biology or FdSc Veterinary Nursing degrees. You could also pursue a career in areas such as:

• animal carer
• laboratory assistant
• welfare assistant
• industry sales person
• veterinary nurse

Notes about fees for this course

No fees to pay - there are no course fees for students aged under 19 on 1 September of the year of entry and for the duration of the programme. This applies to all students who are UK nationals or have settled status in the UK and have been ordinarily resident in the UK or its islands for three years prior to the start of their course. A small number of other students are also not required to pay fees for their course.
