The Oxford Brookes University foundation programme: a global experience

Oxford Brookes Pathways

Guess how many countries are represented on Oxford Brookes’ foundation courses. From Algeria to Zimbabwe, Peru to Poland, our international foundation students hail from an incredibly diverse range of countries. Each of our students encounters a wealth of cultures that enhance their learning environment and social lives. Apart from providing a guaranteed pathway to your bachelor’s degree, this is one of the reasons you will benefit from taking our international foundation course – you will get a truly global experience.

Just read what these students from three separate corners of the world have loved about their foundation at Oxford Brookes:

“I have met so many amazing and diverse groups of people that share different beliefs which is amazing because I never have been exposed to many different perspectives before.”
Oshin, Turks and Caicos Islands

“I really appreciate the cultural diversity on the international foundation course. You get to associate with people from around the globe. One day I’m sitting next to somebody from South Africa and the next day it’s somebody from Australia. You get to have discussions with people from different cultures who share different ideas.”
Christopher, Uganda

“What I most like about my course is that I have the opportunity to meet people from different backgrounds.”
Denisse, Ecuador

During your foundation you take a class called Intercultural Communication. This gives you the chance to explore cultural diversity, language and culture, and learning styles around the world, while developing essential reading, research and writing skills. The coolest thing about this class? Each and every student – you included – is a perfect case study in all of this. How are students taught in Kenya? What are gender relations like in Laos? What languages do Swiss students learn in school. Just turn to your classmates and find out.

And think about how much this will help your career in the future. Employers need people like you who have international experience and appreciate how different cultures interact and communicate. In fact, it’s unlikely you will find a company larger than a small family business which has employees, customers or partners from just one country. This is where the intercultural understanding that you gain on your foundation becomes all the more valuable.

Now, it’s not all about learning – well, not in the classroom anyway. The social experience our foundation students gain while at Oxford Brookes University is enhanced by meeting fellow globetrotters:

“I have friends from Germany, from Spain, from Poland… and it’s really exciting to be a part of.”
Mia, Russia

“I had friends from everywhere – Russia, China, Zimbabwe, another American, a French. It was crazy cool so I loved it, every minute.”
Nickolas, USA

(See what more of our international students say on our Meet Our Students webpage.)

And when you graduate and are planning your round-the-world trip to celebrate, you’ll have friends from every continent to visit as you relive the good times on your foundation.

So, I asked you how many countries our foundation students come from. What do you think? More than 10 countries? More than 20… 30? Higher? The answer, in just one academic year (from September 2017) is 40.

Here’s the full list. Take a deep breath! Algeria, Bermuda, Chile, China, Cyprus, France, Greece, Hong Kong, India, Iran, Italy, Kenya, Kosovo, Laos, Morocco, Netherlands, Oman, Pakistan, Paraguay, Peru, Poland, Qatar, Republic of the Congo, Russia, Saudi Arabia, Slovenia, South Africa, Spain, Sudan, Sweden, Switzerland, Tanzania, Thailand, Turkey, Uganda, UK, USA, Venezuela, Zambia and Zimbabwe.
