The types of university

The majority of universities in Australia are public universities, which account for 37 of the 42 universities in the country. There are 5 private universities, of which 3 are Australian and 2 are international.

Geographically, these universities are mostly located towards the coasts of the country, with many located in the eastern states of Queensland, New South Wales and Victoria.

Popular Australian cities for students

Some of the most popular cities for international students include:

  • Adelaide – Australia’s fifth-largest city, on the coast of South Australia is home to the University of Adelaide, Flinders University and the University of South Australia.
  • Brisbane – Situated in the Gold coast of Australia in the state of Queensland, Brisbane has 14 universities for international students to choose from. 
  • Melbourne – Australia’s largest city, Melbourne is located in the south east of the country in the state of Victoria and has 19 universities.
  • Perth – The capital of Western Australia, Perth is home to 5 universities.
  • Sydney – The capital city of New South Wales, Sydney plays host to 19 universities.

Australia is home to several of the world’s top universities, with programmes taught in English, making it a very attractive location for international students.
