How to Apply to Study in the USA

Pursuing higher education at an American university or college is a dream for many international students, due to the country’s reputation for academic excellence and a rich cultural experience. If you’re one of these students, here’s a guide that will hopefully help you to navigate the application process.

Centralised Application System

The USA doesn’t have a centralised application system for college and university applications. This can present both an opportunity and a challenge for aspiring students. Each university or college possesses its own application process. However, there is a silver lining; platforms such as the Common Application and the Coalition Application are widely used, allowing students to apply to multiple universities using a single form. Nevertheless, always be prepared for individual universities to have their specific requirements.

Steps for Applying

Research and Shortlist: before diving into the application process, you should take the time to research various universities and colleges to determine which ones align with your academic and personal interests. Look into the courses offered by colleges, campus culture, location and resources available to international students.

Understand the Requirements: each university will have specific admission requirements for international students. These often include standardised test scores, GPA conversions, recommendation letters, academic transcripts, and more.

Standardised Test: the SAT or ACT is normally required by undergraduate programs, while graduate programs might ask for the GRE or GMAT. Additionally, as an international student, you’ll likely need to provide TOEFL or IELTS scores to demonstrate your language proficiency.

Prepare Application Materials:

  • Transcripts: you’ll need to provide academic transcripts from your high school, college or sixth form. Some universities may ask for these to be translated into English, or require that they are verified by an educational evaluation agency.
  • Letters of Recommendation: obtain letters from teacher, counsellors, or professionals who can vouch for your qualifications and character.
  • Essays or Personal Statements: these offer an insight into your personality, ambitions, and reasons for choosing a particular college, university, or course.
  • Financial Proof: some universities may ask for evidence that you will be able to cover tuition and living costs.
  • Apply: using the university’s chosen platform (like the Common Application), submit your application. Ensure you adhere to deadlines and provide any supplementary materials required.
  • Application Fee: most universities charge an application fee. The exact amount varies, but there may be waivers available based on financial need.
  • Interview: some universities and colleges will require you to attend an interview. These interviews can be held in person, over the phone or on a video call platform.
  • Await a Response: after you have submitted your application, you need to wait for an admission decision. If you are accepted, you will receive an I-20 form, which is essential for your student visa application.

General Requirements for Courses

Depending on the field of study you are interested in pursuing, course specific requirements can differ. STEM programs, for example, might place more importance on mathematics and science subjects, while arts and humanities programs might prioritise your portfolios or performance samples. If business is your field of interest, showcasing leadership activities or relevant internships can provide you with an edge.

Top Tips for a Successful Application

  • Start Early: the application process can be long, and demands attention to detail. Starting well in advance ensures that you can gather all of the necessary information and documents.
  • Show Authenticity: in your essays and interviews, be genuine and show your personality. Universities will appreciate your originality and sincerity.
  • Seek Guidance: talk to alumni, current students, or university international office staff. Their insights can guide your application process.
  • Proofread: an application that has been proofread and checked over for grammatical and spelling errors will show your professionalism. Feel free to ask family, friends, or your teachers to look over your application too, a second pair of eyes can help to find any issues that you have missed.
  • Highlight Extracurricular Activities: beyond academics, showcase any extracurricular activities or experiences you have. Leadership roles, volunteer work, or unique project can enhance your application.
  • Stay Informed: regularly check your email and the university’s admission portal for updates, additional requirements, or decisions.

Applying to universities and colleges in the USA requires thorough research, preparation, and a keen understanding of individual requirements. By staying organised, showing authenticity, and leveraging your available resources, you can enhance your chances of securing a spot in a desired US university or college.
