International student accommodation trends 2023

Studying abroad has been a popular choice for many students as the world becomes increasingly connected. With the boom in international education, so has the demand for suitable student accommodation.

This trend is projected to continue in the coming years, with a wide range of factors impacting the future of international student accommodation.

This blog will examine the accommodation trends that will affect the international student experience in 2023 and beyond.

The Rise of On-Campus Housing for International Graduates

As the number of international graduate students increases, universities are playing a leading role and investing in on-campus housing. This trend is being spurred not only by the need to provide accessible and affordable accommodation but also by the potential benefits of a more involved and connected student population.

For example, the University of California, San Diego, has just established The Rita Atkinson Residences, a new on-campus graduate housing complex that offers affordable housing options for graduate students, including furnished studios and one-bedroom apartments. This type of accommodation is primarily intended for graduate students who might require a more focused atmosphere for their study and research.

Meanwhile, the University of Toronto is investing in graduate student housing on campus, with options ranging from individual apartments to shared townhouses. The university has recognized that this type of living provides students with a convenient and cost-effective option, develops a sense of belonging, and promotes personal and academic growth.

The Rise in Study Abroad Opportunities is Fuelling the Demand

The number of international students enrolling in universities throughout the world is steadily increasing. According to the UNESCO Centre for Statistics, the number of international students surged from 2.1 million in 2000 to 5.3 million in 2019. This trend is anticipated to continue, with projections predicting an increase to 8 million international students by 2025.

This rise in international student enrolment has resulted in an increased demand for student housing, resulting in significant changes in the student housing market.

For example, the number of international students in the United Kingdom has increased by 42% over the past decade, leading to a shortage of affordable student accommodation. As a result, universities and accommodation providers have begun to make investments in purpose-built student accommodation (PBSA) to satisfy the demands of this growing demographic. In addition, the UK government has introduced a new visa route for graduates. This strategy is projected to increase demand for student housing throughout the country.

Similarly, the number of international students in Australia has surged by 63% over the last decade, causing a shortage of affordable student housing. Some colleges and accommodation providers have made substantial investments in PBSA to address this problem.

The Increasing Demand for Private Student Accommodation

The demand for private student accommodation is growing as more international students demand their personal space. Universities and accommodation providers are increasingly offering single-occupancy rooms with private facilities in response to this demand. These accommodations are designed to provide a comfortable living environment with the extra privacy that many students desire.

Studio apartments are one of the most common types of private student accommodation. They are self-contained apartments with a bedroom, bathroom, kitchen, and living area. Studio apartments are ideal for students who wish to live independently and have their own space without sharing communal areas. They also include modern amenities like air conditioning, heating, and high-speed Wi-Fi.

Several universities and accommodation providers are providing private rooms in shared residences. Each student has a private room in these residences, which often feature multiple bedrooms, bathrooms, and communal areas. This option offers the best of both worlds for students who want privacy in their bedroom but still want to enjoy communal spaces with others.

We hope this article helps you to identify and understand international student accommodation trends in 2023. The future of international student accommodation promises to be bright and exciting. Universities and accommodation providers are adapting to accommodate the different demands of international students, developing a variety of housing options that provide students with the most excellent living experience possible.
