For working professionals, this part-time Master’s in Business Administration degree course develops your leadership and management skills so you can fulfil your career ambitions.

It provides access to development opportunities at postgraduate level for senior managers and those aspiring to senior management in private, public and third sector organisations.

It allows you to develop your capabilities as a leader and manager, gives you the confidence to improve your performance and can transform your future by developing the skills to progress your career and increase your impact.

Many students who graduate from this course accelerate their careers and progress into senior management and leadership positions. Others choose new directions, including launching their own business ventures.

After you complete the course, you can apply through the ‘qualified route' to the Chartered Management Institute (CMI) to become a Chartered Member (CMg MCMI) or a Chartered Fellow (CMgr FCMI), depending on your experience. We will provide you with further information about the options available and the processes involved during the course.

Degree apprenticeship option

We also offer a degree apprenticeship MBA Strategic Leadership course at the University of Portsmouth. The entry requirements are the same for both courses and both enable participants to achieve a globally recognised business management degree.

You can also achieve a professional Chartered Management Institute (CMI) qualification after completing the MBA Strategic Leadership degree apprenticeship.

The key differences with the degree apprenticeship option are:

  • Students complete the degree apprenticeship course as a degree apprentice, which offers day release to attend classes.
  • Students don’t pay their tuition fees on degree apprenticeships – they’re funded by the apprenticeship levy fund or the student’s employer and the Government.

What you'll study

The Portsmouth MBA Strategic Leadership course is a flexible part-time course. It’s mostly delivered on campus one day a week on alternate weeks over two academic years.

The pace of learning enables you to focus on your learning in the MBA classroom, then take what you have learned back into the workplace for even better results.

Because study is part-time, there is minimal disruption to your work and home commitments. Our MBA academics and professional staff, who understand the pressures of combining work and study, fully support you throughout the programme.

Therefore, some course content may change over time to reflect changes in the discipline or industry and some optional units may not run every year. If a unit doesn’t run, we’ll let you know as soon as possible and help you choose an alternative unit.


You will receive regular feedback on your development throughout the course.

Our collegial, supportive learning environment makes use of lectures and seminars, business simulations, group discussions and case studies that help you analyse complex problems, evaluate opportunities and risks, propose solutions and plan their implementation, drawing on current management research and practice.

Notes about fees for this course

Entry requirements

A second-class honours degree (or equivalent, including professional qualifications), not necessarily in a business related subject, plus at least 3 years of work experience at a professional or managerial level. Alternatively, applicants without formal qualifications, but with a minimum of 5 years of management experience, are welcome to apply. Applicants may be subject to interview and/or be asked to submit a portfolio in support of their application.

All applicants to the Degree Apprenticeship courses must have an acceptable Level 2 qualification in English and Mathematics. Acceptable qualifications include GCSE with grade C/4 or above and Functional Skills with Pass - please note that we are not able to accept all kinds of Level 2 qualifications, so if you an unsure whether you have a suitable qualification please get in touch. If you do not have an acceptable qualification you may be required to take an additional assessment during the application process. 

English language proficiency at a minimum of IELTS band 6.5 with no component score below 6.0.
