About Engineering, MPhil - at University of Exeter

As a PhD or MPhil student in engineering you will be a member of the School of Engineering, Computer Science and Mathematics, home to around 70 academic and technical staff and over 100 research staff and postgraduates. The current research activities in Engineering cover a wide range of interests within civil, electronic, mechanical, manufacturing and materials engineering, as well as in engineering management. Research funding is obtained from a range of sources such as the UK Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council, the Department of Trade and Industry, the South West Regional Development Agency, the European Union and local, national and international industry. Research funding for the school is of the order of £2 million per year.

The School is organised into three research institutes, Advanced Technologies, Informatics and Mathematics, that each bring together the research activities in one of our three disciplines - Engineering, Computer Science and Mathematics. The institutes allow for greater cross-collaboration and bring together multidisciplinary teams to tackle a range of important and exciting research problems.

The Advanced Technologies Research Institute combines international quality research in the areas of materials, manufacturing and electronics, with particular interests in bioengineering and biomedical materials, auxetic materials, data storage materials, agile and dynamic manufacturing systems, data storage systems and sea-wave prediction.

The Informatics Research Institute brings together engineers and computer scientists working on a variety of modern-day, interdisciplinary topics with a particular engineering interest in the design and optimisation of water distribution and waste networks and systems. The School's internationally renowned Centre for Water Systems further strengthens research activity of this Institute

The Mathematics Research Institute covers a wide range of topics from Applied and Pure Mathematics to Statistics. Current areas or research focus on four themes: Climate and Environmental Modelling; Dynamical Systems and Control; Fluid Dynamics; and Pure Mathematics. The research opportunities for the Mathematics Research Institute are described separately under Mathematics Research Degrees.
