About Physics of Data at University of Padova

New degree course, to be approved by the Italian Ministry of Education, Higher Education and Research

The onset of big data has led to an explosion of datasets with a far more complex structure and beyond standard physics. In this program, we will provide new theoretical and computational tools to tackle this challenge within the physicist mindset.

Course description

The program intends to build an academic and professional figure that combines advanced knowledge in the field of Physics with a high-level training in Data Science.
The modeling and the theoretical interpretation of complex natural phenomena from large amounts of data are at the core of the research in Physics. The Big Data revolution presents in this sense the challenges and opportunities for the physicist of today. In addition to the figure of Data Scientist, specialized purely in the analysis of large amounts of data, it is increasingly clear the need to also train figures able to develop the methods and techniques that are fundamental for such analysis - in this sense we named the program of Physics of the Data.  Training in Physics, Mathematics and Computation is increasingly necessary to generate such innovation and development. The program will thus train a new generation of physicists, which we could define as "data physicists", equipped with tools that will allow them to face the challenges that the digital revolution has brought in our society .

Notes about fees for this course

Information on 2018/19 fees will be available in 2018: amounts will largely stay the same as for A.Y. 2017/18.

For academic year 2017/18: euro 2.597,00.

The above amounts can be significantly waived (minimum fee: 561,00 euro/A.Y.) based on your “Equivalent Economic Status Index – ISEE”. For further information on how to obtain your ISEE and other income-based reductions, see Funding and fees - Key Documents.

Applicants receiving an offer of admission, either unconditional or conditional, will be asked to pay a tuition fee deposit of euro 182,00 within 30 days to secure their place on the programme.

Entry requirements

To be admitted to the program “Physics of Data” the candidate must have basic knowledge in the following disciplines: classical and quantum physics and statistical mechanics; differential and integral calculus for functions of one and more real variables; linear algebra; probability calculation. The possession of these knowledge, skills and abilities is verified by the achievement of:

  • Degree classification equivalent to at least 90/110
  • 24 CFU in the following areas: FIS/01-08 which at least 12 in FIS/02 and 6 among FIS/03, FIS/04 o FIS/05; 24 CFU in MAT/01-09.

Language requirements

B2 level of ENGLISH (reading and listening); no formal certificate is needed.
