In 1977, the Guitar Institute of Technology (GIT) revolutionized contemporary music education with the first full-time program to offer hands-on professional training for the electric guitarist. Over three decades later, MI remains the leader in guitar education with a unique system that combines technical, creative and professional development in a performance-based program. At MI, you learn from a proven curriculum taught by the best guitar instructors in the world, augmented by visiting artists' seminars, concerts and lessons from some of the greatest players in contemporary music. Network with other players, find your creative voice, and get the training you need to become the player you have always dreamed of being.

Performance-Based Education in Contemporary Music

Musicians Institute's challenging Bachelor of Music in Performance (Contemporary Styles) is a unique degree program combining contemporary music performance with rigorous education in traditional music disciplines. The intensive program emphasizes the development of stylistic depth, creative maturity and professional competence as part of a comprehensive program preparing you to enter the contemporary music industry. Upon completion of all requirements, you are eligible to receive the Bachelor of Music in Performance in one of five major instruments of study: Guitar, Bass, Drums, Keyboard and Vocals.

Associate of Arts

The Associate of Arts in Performance (Guitar) program includes a combination of general and instrument-specific courses designed to produce skilled, knowledgeable, stylistically versatile contemporary performing guitarists. Courses are described below (see course catalog for specific course descriptions and other information). Combined with regular seminars, clinics, and small open counselling sessions with internationally-known guitarists, the AA-Guitar program provides the world's premier contemporary guitar educational experience.

AA Degree Emphasis

Associate of Arts students in instrument performance programs (Bass, Drums, Guitar, Keyboard Technology, Vocals) may opt for a course of study which combines the performance program with a music industry program (Audio Engineering, DJ Performance & Production, Guitar Craft, Music Business, Independent Artist).

Enrolment in such programs is dependent upon admission approval and space availability.

*Associate programs are vocational and do not include General Education requirements or specific preparation for study at the Baccalaureate level.

Certificate

The four-quarter, 60 credit-unit Certificate in Performance (Guitar) curriculum is based on a teaching system that develops technical, creative and professional skills in a performance-intensive, total-immersion environment. The large, diverse staff of the best guitar instructors in the world is augmented by regular seminars, concerts, and lessons from top-ranked visiting artists. Beyond the classroom, the Guitar Program at MI is a unique opportunity to meet other players, find your creative voice, and become the player you have always dreamed of being.

MI Select

The MI Select Program (Non-Certificate Training in Music Performance) is designed to allow you to create a full-time, ten-week program by choosing from available lessons, classes, performance workshops and other activities. Enrolment is available at the beginning of any quarter and may be repeated for additional quarters.

Schedule

After an initial evaluation, the MI Select Coordinator will provide you with a list of available courses attuned to your level of knowledge and skill. From that list, you create a class schedule equal to a full-time credit load of fifteen units.

NOTE: Course offerings vary by quarter so some courses and programs are not available for MI Select enrolment. Please confirm the availability of specific courses with the MI Select Coordinator prior to enrolment.

Private Lessons

Every instrument MI Select session includes weekly, one-hour private lessons on your primary instrument. You and the instructor jointly develop a lesson plan based on your particular interests and the instructor provides general guidance throughout the program.

NOTE: Requests for private lessons with a specific instructor are subject to instructor availability.

Access

MI Select enrolment includes 24-hour access to MI's facilities for practice and rehearsal, access to extra-curricular activities and the library, and admission to clinics and seminars offered during your period of enrolment.
