About Major Project & Programme Management at Westminster Business School, London, University of Westminster

Effective project and programme management is recognised as a key element of success in today's global environment. Core skills such as planning, risk, quality and advanced communication management are recognised as essential to successfully delivering the increasingly complex projects that allow organisations to remain competitive.

This course builds on the University of Westminster's already strong reputation, demonstrable expertise and relationships within the area of project management and has been designed to allow you to undertake a deep examination of organisational issues without leaving your current employment. With emphasis on both strategic thinking and leadership in major project and programme management, it offers a balance between theory and practice. This is further augmented by the peer-to-peer learning opportunities that arise from the expected professional project management experience within the student cohort. Successful completion should enhance your career prospects either within your current organisations or in other national and international organisations where programme management is an established function.

The Major Project and Programme Management MSc will enhance your knowledge and skills as a leader capable of managing major projects and programmes in international, complex strategic contexts. You will develop your ability to critically analyse and manage risks in the context of major projects and programmes using appropriate tools and methods. Professional and communication skills development is also part of this course and you will explore and familiarise yourself with the codes of practice as expected by the leading project management professional bodies.

The taught modules on this course collectively provide the coverage expected by the professional bodies (Body of Knowledge) of project management. You will also be invited to a series of guest lectures delivered by leading experts from industry and the relevant professional bodies.

Study trip

As part of this course, you will be offered the opportunity to join a subsidised four-day study trip to Salzburg, Austria.  The aim of the trip is to be expose you to real experience of large (international) organisations practicing project management in action. Past visits for students on our Project Management MSc have included organisations such as Red Bull, Swarovski, Munich International Airport and Mozart Foundation.

Course structure

All modules in the programme are core. Each contributes to the development of the core knowledge, subject-specific capabilities and transferable skills of the subject.

Each taught module will be delivered across five teaching days (normally Wednesday to Sunday), with independent learning either side of this combining to create an 11-week learning period per module. The first of these will include a residential weekend, which will aim to enhance group integration and give you and your peers the opportunity to informally share professional experience.

Teaching will include a mixture of discussion led lectures, tutorials and seminars. Lectures will include guest speakers who offer practice or research based insights into the challenges facing the field or the profession whilst seminars will allow for other problem solving settings, ranging from individual to group tasks. Case studies of high profile  projects and programmes will also be used to critique current practice and highlight best practice. On successful completion of the taught modules, you will also undertake a dissertation.

In addition to the core modules, you will be given the opportunity to attend a five-day in-house course leading to the Managing Successful Programmes (MSP) Foundation and Practitioner certificates.

Core modules

The module explains the main aspects and the challenges of project and programme management. It studies causes of project failures and uses this to define the role of project and programme management.

This module provides the skills and knowledge required to successfully manage programmes of projects within an organisational strategy. It develops an understanding about how programme management is used as a strategic tool.

This module covers two inter-related aspects of project management: Project Finance and Project Procurement. It gives an insight into Project Finance for major projects. It explains the concepts of procurement, contracting, strategic project supply chain management as well as project outsourcing.

This module focuses on frameworks for taking informed decisions relating to major risks management and the contemporary issues of cyber security management in the context of major projects and programmes.

Stakeholder engagement and governance vary depending on the types of stakeholder and the complexity of projects. This module considers these two facets in order to effectively evaluate and improve engagement and governance.

The module presents strategies, skills and techniques for successfully leading change through major projects and programmes. It draws on students' experience as well as exemplars from other organisations.

The module allows students to demonstrate their understanding of major project and programme management theory as applied to a realistic environment. It draws on all the modules of the MSc by demanding a critical piece of research in major project(s) or programme(s).

Vanessa De Silva, Management Consultant, Expertise Limited, Bermuda

Testimonial from Vanessa De Silva, Management Consultant, Expertise Limited, Bermuda, student at Westminster Business School, London
As an international student I was looking for a Master's program that would offer me an experience and education that I could utilise worldwide. The University of Westminster was a simple choice for me knowing the superior level of education, top quality professors and fabulous location offered. The culturally diverse group of classmates held various levels of professional experience which enriched my learning as we continued to develop and challenge each other.

Having completed the MA Human Resource Management specialising in Employee Relations I have acquired an education which lead me to a fulfilling career rather than a short-term job. As a Management Consultant in an Employment Services firm I work with local and international clients and have continued to develop my practical experience in employee relations, policy development, recruitment and performance management.

Andrew Behles, Trainee Chartered Accountant, Nexia Smith & Williamson

Testimonial from Andrew Behles, Trainee Chartered Accountant, Nexia Smith & Williamson, student at Westminster Business School, London
As a US national with relatively little experience in international accounting standards and practices prior to beginning the course, the WBS Msc in Finance and Accounting provided me with a useful blend of accounting theory and practice that has well equipped me for securing a job in international audit in the UK upon graduation. And with up to six exemptions from ACCA exams, its easy to see a quick and tangible return on investment.

Owen Coughlan, RBS Global Banking & Markets

Testimonial from Owen Coughlan, RBS Global Banking & Markets, student at Westminster Business School, London
A Distinction in my Masters at the University of Westminster gave me the knowledge and confidence to gain a coveted job in an investment bank. Having a solid grounding in theory combined with practice in my Westminster Business School degree enabled me to take on the added responsibilities I needed to advance my career.
