Course summary

OverviewThe BA (Hons) Journalism course takes into account the rapidly developing news media landscape. It has been designed to train you in a variety of journalistic forms, including:
  • video
  • radio
  • photojournalism.
Why choose this course?Contemporary journalism has moved away from the traditional idea of print journalists writing stories that are published daily. The course offers a tailored and balanced approach, equipping you with the ability to not only produce written work but also be able to produce and edit video and audio material in addition to updating and moderating online content. The teaching on the course reflects the shift away from pre-existing and traditional methods and embraces current journalism practice.
The course aims to produce graduates who understand the established conventions and know how to utilise the creative opportunities available for Journalist in their various formats through engaging multimedia content.
While you may wish to pursue a career as a traditional print journalists, the course will introduce you to a variety of disciplines including:
  • podcasting
  • video production
  • radio journalism
  • media presentation skills. 
You will also be equipped to write for a variety of specialist publications, including fashion, sport, and music journalism. 
The foundation year has been designed to equip you with the skills and knowledge required to continue onto the BA degree course. Throughout this year you will benefit from full access to University facilities. You will study a range of subjects that underpin subsequent study throughout your degree and will be encouraged to engage in a range of course activities.
Career and study progressionGraduates of  BA (Hons) Journalism will have a range of career prospects open  to  them including work in print and online,  news organisations at the national, regional, and international levels. Managing social media streams, as well as providing video and audio content.
You may also wish to undertake postgraduate study to specialise in a subject you've already studied, or to explore something new.

Funding

Help with funding is available to a range of students, whether you are studying full or part-time, in your home country or overseas.

You may be eligible for a student loan to cover the cost of tuition fees or a maintenance loan to support you during your studies.   • Full Time Undergraduate Bursary: a £3,000 award for new undergraduate students.
  • Path to Success Scholarship: a £4,000 award for students on a four-year degree course with a foundation year.

Please note fees are paid for each year of study unless otherwise stated. You will be required to re-enrol and pay fees at the beginning of each academic year. Fees may be subject to government regulations on fee increases. Future inflationary increases will be applied to each subsequent year of the course, subject to government regulations on fee increases.

Entry requirements

Entry requirements

You will need:

  • 72 UCAS tariff points
  • GCSE English and Maths at grade C or above (or equivalent)
  • A levels: BC or DDD
  • BTEC Extended Diploma: Merit, Merit, Pass

International students need to meet our English language requirement at either IELTS at 6.0 or above and a minimum of 5.5 for each of the 4 individual components (Reading, Writing, Speaking and Listening).
