About Mechanical Engineering (BSc), BSc - at University of Twente

The Bachelor's programme Mechanical Engineering is a multi-faceted, future-proof university programme, during which you will learn to convert technical knowledge into practical solutions for today's problems.

A broad engineering study

If you enjoy searching for engineering solutions for all sorts of contemporary problems and want to lay a broad foundation for this, Mechanical Engineering is probably right up your street. A mechanical engineer designs, improves and maintains machines, buildings or processes. Although mechanical engineering is one of the oldest disciplines, you will discover that today's modern technologies are all connected with, and depending on, mechanical engineering. As a mechanical engineer you may eventually find yourself in any of a wide range of sectors and positions, from civil and aeronautical engineering to biomedical sciences or nano-technology.

What is Mechanical Engineering?

Mechanical Engineering is one of the broadest engineering programmes. You can work on improving and optimizing existing technology and processes, but many mechanical engineers also come up with and design new products. This can be on a smaller or larger scale, from a 3D-printer to a container ship or an energy plant. Mechanical engineers are involved in almost every product design you can think of: wherever people or organisations are in need of high-tech solutions, you can pitch in.

During the Bachelor's programme Mechanical Engineering at Twente you will learn to apply fundamental knowledge in socially relevant solutions. Connecting theory and practice is central to our programme. One way in which we do this is working on projects. In a project, you will work with a team of fellow students on applying the theory you have learned in classes and lectures. For example, you might design an energy-efficient ice-skating rink or a garbage-collecting vehicle for festival grounds. Together with your team you will go through the whole process of conception and design. And sometimes you even get to build a working prototype. Theory, practice and social impact go hand in hand in this programme.

Reasons for studying Mechanical Engineering

Do you enjoy fixing things and putting things together? Are you fascinated by how things are built, how they work and how they can make a difference in the real world ? from small tools and gadgets to cars, airplanes, industrial installations or unexpected solutions for modern-day challenges? Then the Mechanical Engineering programme may well be the right choice for you.

As an academically trained mechanical engineer you can also focus on why things work the way they do. How can we improve a space's acoustics? How can we develop engines that are cleaner and more energy-efficient? How can the stability of a human vertebrae be improved? How can we set up an organization's production department for optimal results? Can it be made faster, cheaper or more efficient?

Designing, organizing or researching?

The Bachelor's programme Mechanical Engineering at the University of Twente is designed to help you discover where your strengths lie: in designing, organizing or researching solutions. This approach means you will not only acquire theoretical knowledge and practical skills, you will also discover how to your talents and personality can shine.
