Entry requirements

To be enrolled onto a PhD programme, it is generally expected that you hold a Masters degree. For degrees studied in the UK system, your undergraduate degree should be at 2.1 level and/or your Masters degree at Merit level, in a relevant subject. For applicants with a degree from the USA, the minimum GPA sought is 3.0 out of 4.0. For applicants with a degree from China, the minimum weighted average score is 80 out 100. Applicants with other international qualifications should meet the equivalent of the above UK minimum entry requirement. Please note that admission to UNNC is very competitive, and that meeting the minimum entry requirements does not guarantee an offer of a place. At the School of Education and English we currently receive a very large number of queries about PhD study, and the majority of prospective applicants are unfortunately unable to be matched with an available supervisor. English language requirements IELTS: 7.0 (minimum 6.0 in all elements) PTE Academic: 76 (minimum 65) TOEFL (IBT): 100 (minimum 20 in Speaking and 19 in all other elements)

What students think about University of Nottingham Ningbo China

Murtaza Faruquee - PhD in Marketing

Testimonial from Murtaza Faruquee - PhD in Marketing, student at University of Nottingham Ningbo China

“UNNC provides a unique embodiment for PhD research. I have received the best of the philosophical and theoretical robustness of British research style and at the same time the cultural richness of China, which have helped me to understand things from different vantage points, and collectively made me a better researcher.

I came to this institution as a knowledge-hungry sapling and learned to grow with wisdom. The journey of achieving a PhD is a challenging yet divine experience. As an international student, I cannot think of any other place where I could get a similar exposure and opportunities together.”

Phoebe Miles - PhD in English Studies

Testimonial from Phoebe Miles - PhD in English Studies, student at University of Nottingham Ningbo China

“Achieving a PhD is not just about your thesis; it’s about recognising your own abilities and developing yourself as a researcher. Since choosing UNNC, I’ve had multiple opportunities in both academia and in my own personal interests. I’ve learnt another language, explored new culture, and formed networks that will support my academic career for years to come.”

Devianita - MSc Entrepreneurship and Innovation Management

Testimonial from Devianita - MSc Entrepreneurship and Innovation Management, student at University of Nottingham Ningbo China

"Doing the one-year master's programme at UNNC has been an exciting journey for me. It is a pity that I could not attend the lectures physically due to the pandemic. Nevertheless, the lecturers and staff have always put tremendous effort in delivering the course materials clearly. Moreover, making friends with others who come from different backgrounds has been wonderful. Other than studying theories, I am very grateful that UNNC's MSc Entrepreneurship and Innovation Management programme has also provided me with hands-on experience throughout the extensive curriculum. It has allowed me to realise my value, sharpen my creative thinking, and become a more effective person who is ready to contribute to society. There is a saying which goes, 'A journey of a thousand miles begins with one step.' and I believe I have taken that one step right here at UNNC. "
