Description:
The School of Design at the University of Leeds is internationally renowned for its research activities. The School carries out research in three interconnected and interdisciplinary areas – Design, Technology, and Practice as Research – that encompass aesthetic and function dimensions of design.
Alongside fundamental research, the School is committed to solving real world problems through the use of advanced technologies, design thinking, and creativity, and by linking these in a meaningful way; our researchers work extensively with industry to ensure our research brings the highest tangible impact to society and culture.
You may undertake fundamental or applied research relating to a broad range of specialist areas in Archiving and Design History, Experience Design, Textile and Fashion Design, Visual Communication, Colour and Imaging, Textile Technology and Art Practice as Research, led by experienced academics.
The School has excellent specialist design studios, research laboratories, pilot-scale machinery and library resources to support the various research specialisms offered. Extensive facilities include laboratories for technical textiles and nonwovens, high performance testing, colour and imaging science, dyeing and finishing, colour and textile chemistry, and specialist studios for textile design, multi-media and animation, graphic design, sculpture and painting.
As a research student in the School of Design, you will find yourself in a dynamic research-intensive environment, located at the heart of the University campus. You will become part of a lively postgraduate culture which attracts researchers from all over the world and be able to work with experienced researchers from many fields of activity, in a supportive and exciting research environment.
