Norwich Medical School developed the first higher degree qualification in Regional Anaesthesia in the UK with support from the major anaesthetic organisations, including the Royal College of Anaesthetists, the Association of Anaesthetists of Great Britain and Ireland and Regional Anaesthesia United Kingdom.
Study
A course developed for current trainees working toward CCT who often lack time to pursue high quality learning, so this part-time, work-based study programme is conducted via e-learning and distance learning methods. Topics covered will include anatomy, pharmacology, neurophysiology, methodology, research, clinical governance and anaesthesia in various sub-specialities and special situations.
Structure
With both theoretical and practical elements, the centre of the course is a flexible e-learning hub, (Virtual Learning Environment) where all learning and forum discussions take place; where all students' training needs are met, from access to directed reading, to feedback from course tutors resides. This allows students to study in a goal-directed way by organising their own time commitments. The course also includes problem-based learning scenarios, researching literature, ensuring theory and practice are based on strong scientific principles, and a research project with mentoring support, both online and locally.
Teaching
This course is delivered by a UK-wide eminent faculty of nationally recognised experts in the field. Norwich Medical School at the University of East Anglia has established a reputation for exciting and innovative approaches to education supported by a strong and rapidly developing research programme. As part of the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences it has a growing emphasis on inter-professional co-operation in teaching and research.
Employability
Students will progress through the programme by first receiving a Postgraduate Certificate (PGCert), followed by a Postgraduate Diploma (PGDip) and after acceptance of a research dissertation, the MSc degree. There is a substantial need for a higher qualification in Regional Anaesthesia to evidence the skills and knowledge of those trained in this subspecialty, and this is the highest qualification in this field in the UK and world-wide.
