The MA is specifically designed for theatre practitioners to develop critical and creative skills in a supportive environment leading to a postgraduate qualification.

Using, reflecting and building on your own practice, you will develop your own learning trajectory throughout the programme in order for you to nurture your own creativity and innovation, and develop key skills in your own area. You will have the chance to develop your own critical and creative skills either through our mentor approach or through time on campus at various points in the year. Our tutors come from the theatre industry and are aware of the challenges that undertaking postgraduate study can present and flexibility is built into the fabric of the MA.

At the heart of this award, your personal and career development will be placed centre stage, supporting your growth as a theatre practitioner whether you are new to your profession or have a wealth of professional experience.

Course content

The award consists of a series of core modules, which allow you to design and negotiate the content of the assignments so that you can tailor your award to meet your specific career goals.

Compulsory modules

Approaches to Flexible Learning
Introduces you to negotiated learning and allows you to develop your chosen learning pathway via the development of a Learning Contract. Here you map out initial plans for the negotiated modules that will compile your award.

Research Methods
Prepares you to undertake research activity focusing upon the different and often diverse ways of collecting primary information on a chosen area.

Creative Industries Professional Practice
This module will give you a grounding in the specific requirement of professional theatre practice. The content of the assessment work is decided by you and you will be expected to demonstrate research into a specific subject area and work undertaken should be evidenced with testing, reflection and critical evaluation.

Negotiated Learning Modules, including a final Masters Project
Allow you to develop work-based theatre projects within your chosen area of specialism. They may be taken from 'real life' situations your are engaging with in your working life, or they may be new areas of development you wish to explore in your professional practice. Our expert staff are on hand to mentor you through these development and delivery of these modules.

The negotiated modules culminate in a final Masters Project, which may be presented in the form of a traditional dissertation, or a mixture of practical and reflective report elements. You are supported throughout these modules by close guidance from staff.

Entry requirements

An Undergraduate Honours degree of a United Kingdom institution of higher education (graded 2.2 or above) or the international equivalent.
A minimum score of IELTS examinations passed at WLTS 6.5 or an equivalent qualification.
In addition we would also accept non-standard applicants who have considerable relevant professional experience and/or a record of academic achievement.
