About BSc in Mechanical Engineering, BSc - at Abdullah Gül University

“The ideal engineer is a composite ... He is not a scientist, he is not a mathematician, he is not a sociologist or a writer; but he may use the knowledge and techniques of any or all of these disciplines in solving engineering problems.”

N.W. Dougherty

Mechanical engineering can be defined as an interdisciplinary engineering field, which is one of the oldest and the most comprehensive engineering disciplines that comprises developing, designing, controlling, and testing processes of products varying from very small scale devices (such as micro-robots that transport medicine in veins) to larger scale devices(spacecrafts, huge trucks) including mechanical parts and systems.

Mechanical engineers starts from the analysis, design, and production stages of simple components (screws, bolts) to very complex systems (humanoid robots, control systems of air vehicles and spacecrafts) to provide desired functions of the product while considering working conditions it will be exposed to (force, heat, humidity, vibration, etc.).

What are the career opportunities in Mechanical Engineering?

Mechanical engineers play a crucial role in various industrial areas. These areas can be listed as follows; automotive (engine, chassis, suspension, gearbox etc.), nuclear and thermoelectric power plants, air and space vehicle design, biotechnology (prosthetic devices, operational robots, medication production systems), energy generation (hydrolic, gas and wind generators, solar power, nuclear energy, fuel cells), construction, agriculture and mining machines, microelectromechanical systems (micro-sensors and actuators, micro-power generation), computer and electronic devices (air conditioner, compressors, pumps), automation (production robots, graphic identification and controls), production (processing, prototype, production tools), and system integrations.

In all these work areas, mechanical engineers can be in charge of many different positions. Research and development engineer, design engineer, test engineer, production engineer, quality control engineer, system analysis engineer, computer modeling and simulation engineer, maintenance engineer sales engineer, and counseling engineer are the positions that a mechanical engineer can occupy as as a skilled engineer or a manager. A brief list of possible employment areas along with some sectors & companies are provided below.

·Public Sector: Institutions such as Ministry of Science, Industry and Technology, TÜBİTAK, Ministry of Health, Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources, Ministry of Environment and Urban Planning, Ministry of Transportation, Maritime Affairs and Communications, EPDK, BTK, Under secretariat for Defense Industries, etc.

·Defence and Aviation Sector: Institues such as Aselsan, Havelsan, Roketsan, Mikes, STM, FNSS, TAI, TUSAŞ, Otokar, MKEK, Siemens, Netaş, Turkish Airlines, Pegasus Airlines, etc.

·Health Sector: State and private hospitals that provide health care and private hospitals such as Acıbadem, Medical Park and DünyaGöz, the corporations that products and sales medical devices such as General Electric, Siemens, Toshiba, Nüve, Üzümcü, etc.

·Energy and Automotive Sector: Facilities in electric generation and distribution corporations such as EnerjiSA, Aksa, Zorlu Energy, Sanko Energy, automotive corporations such as Ford, TOFAŞ, Renault, Toyota, Hyundai, BMC, etc.

·White Goods and Consumer Electronics Sector: Corporations such as Arçelik, Vestel, Bosch, Schneider, Kumtel, Casper, etc.

·Marine Sector

·Construction Sector

Besides these working areas, through the Mechanical Engineering Department at AGU, students will be equipped with critical thinking, analyzing, problem solving skills and self-confidence that are necessary for developing and producing systems for the needs of the present day and the future. In addition, for those who are interested in scientific aspects of Mechanical Engineering, there is always an opportunity to conduct research and to become an academician. Almost all of the universities in Turkey need successful, productive academicians who are also capable of giving lectures in English.

Machine production industry, as reported in TÜBİTAK Vision 2023 “Machine and Material Panel Technological Estimation Report”, is one of the most important areas for Turkey. Primary research topics are listed in this report and shown below:

·Hybrid Cars (Fossil fuels, biofuels, and hydrogen using internal combustion engines that minimize emissions, land and marine vehicles with fuel cells)

·Ultra–light metals and composites with high strength

·Energy (H2) storing material technologies

·Smart machines (industrial robots, micro-machines, micro-electronic production machines, self-guided machines and defense platforms)

A country must be capable of conducting high-technology R&D in all these fields and the industry must produce high technology products that can be exported. These could only be achieved through the qualified and eligible personnel. AGU ME aims to educate those engineers who significantly contribute to development of their country.
