Course summary

Overview
This course aims to develop professional, competent and reflective operating department practitioners who are able to provide high standards of compassionate patient care during the anaesthetic, surgical and post-anaesthetic recovery phases of the perioperative journey.

This course aims to:

  • develop a safe, compassionate and confident perioperative practitioner, who is professional, accountable and can work effectively as part of an inter-professional team.
  • facilitate the development of a research minded perioperative practitioner who is able to use higher order cognitive skills, such as problem solving and critical thinking skills, to inform the clinical decisions they make in practice.
  • develop a perioperative practitioner who is able to integrate theory to practice, promoting innovation and effective change.
  • develop a perioperative practitioner who is an independent, highly motivated, reflective, lifelong learner.
  • facilitate the development of a perioperative practitioner who meets the Standards of Proficiency for Operating Department Practitioners as set out by the HCPC and is eligible to apply to register with the regulatory body (HCPC).

Main fee£9,250

Funding

Funding for pre-registration allied health professional (AHP) courses has changed. From the 1st August 2017 new AHP students in England will take out maintenance and tuition loans like other students, rather than getting an NHS grant. We also offer a range of scholarships and bursaries to help you. Current scholarships include:

  • Full Time Undergraduate Bursary: a £3,000 award for new undergraduate students.
  • Path to Success Scholarship: a £4,000 award for students on a four-year degree course with a foundation year.

Please note fees are paid for each year of study unless otherwise stated. You will be required to re-enrol and pay fees at the beginning of each academic year. Entry requirements

Entry requirements

1). Academic Requirements

Applicants will hold:

  • 104-120 UCAS tariff points
    N.B. Qualifications at Level 3, such as Access to Nursing/Health or Social care/Science with a Merit/Distinction profile will be considered.
  • GCSE Grade C or above in English language and mathematics.

2). Selection Day Requirements
Applicants for this course are required to attend a values based recruitment selection process, which is compulsory. The aim of this selection process is to ensure candidates demonstrate an interest in the ODP profession, evidence of good communication skills, ability to emphasise with others, problem solve and use initiative. This selection process includes a:

  • Numeracy and literacy test (which must be passed - pass mark 70%). Please download our examples of both the tests: Literacy Test / Numeracy Test. This will give you an opportunity to practice ahead of the selection day.
  • Group problem solving activity
  • Individual interview with academic and clinical staff

Clinicians from our partner Trusts are actively involved in the recruitment process. The College has begun to engage service users in the recruitment and selection process and this approach will apply to this course in the near future.

3). Other professional Requirements
All offers are subject to a satisfactory:

  • Disclosure and Barring Service Check (DBS check) Enhanced check (clearance to Work with Children and/or Vulnerable Adults)
  • Enhanced Occupational health review (includes assessment in relation to exposure prone procedures)
  • Two references (one of which must be from an educational institution showing evidence of study in the last five years).

Minimum age requirement on entry to the course is 18 years.

As well as having the above qualifications or equivalents, you must be classified as a Home/EU student prior to starting the course. All students also need to meet our English language requirement at either IELTS at 7.0 or above,and a minimum of 7 for each of the 4 individual components (Reading, Writing, Speaking and Listening). Prior work experience required

It is beneficial for applicants to have had some related experience in a health care setting. This may be paid, voluntary or as part of a vocational qualification. It is also recommended that candidates have undertaken some academic study within the past five years.
