About Chinese Studies, BA - at University of Wales Trinity Saint David

Course Overview

The BA Chinese Studies aims to develop fluency in Mandarin and familiarise students with Chinese history and culture in its various manifestations across the entire span of China's pre-modern and modern history. Individual modules examine China's history, media, politics, philosophy and religions in both past and present.

Single Honours students will spend one year in China, at Beijing Union University or one of our other Chinese partner institutions. This option is also open to Joint Honours students. All students have a further chance to apply for short-term language courses in China and scholarships administered by the Centre for Chinese Studies and the Confucius Institute.

We welcome applications from applicants both with and without prior knowledge of Chinese (Mandarin).

Applicants who have obtained formal qualifications in Mandarin such as HSK, GSCE or A-Level will be allowed to take language modules at the appropriate level. We will conduct an entry test to determine a student's actual proficiency in the areas of speaking, listening, reading and writing at point of entry into the programme.

The course can be studied in combination with another subject (Joint Honours). For possible combinations see 'Related Courses'.

Key Features

Lampeter has been at the forefront of Chinese Studies provision in Wales since 1992 when it started to offer modules in the field of Chinese religion and culture, and Confucian and Daoist Philosophy. A Single Honours BA Chinese Studies was first validated by the University in 2007 to address a growing demand for graduates with linguistic and cultural expertise related to China.

Lampeter offers the unique opportunity to combine Chinese Studies with a range of other subjects in a Joint Honours programme. A Joint Honours degree has the advantage that in addition to being trained in a subject you will also receive a solid grounding in the methodology and key themes of another 'systematic' discipline, a good preparation for postgraduate study.

Students with prior knowledge of Chinese can enter the language programme at a level appropriate to their knowledge, ranging from Basic, Intermediate, Advanced, Further Advanced to Higher Advanced level. For example, students with good GCSE or A-Level results in Mandarin can expect to take Intermediate Chinese in their first year.

We are a small university and relish the intensive contact between lecturers and students.

Our staff is regularly commended by external examiners for the comprehensiveness and high quality of their feedback to students. Our students also benefit from small class sizes.

Using a variety of teaching and assessment methods contributes to the breadth of scope of the undergraduate degree in Chinese Studies, with seminars, tutorials, workshop sessions and field trips held alongside the more traditional lectures, as well as more modern methods utilising the internet and other e-learning facilities.

The Confucius Institute (CI) enhances the Chinese Studies degree scheme through an annual summer camp and scholarships. Advanced students are encouraged to become involved in the organisation of cultural events or in one of the CI's Confucius Classrooms, a brilliant way to make practical use of your knowledge and skills and beef up your CV.

UWTSD operates generous bursary schemes to support extracurricular activities.

Career Opportunities

Rather than preparing you for a career in one profession, a degree in Chinese Studies equips you with transferable skills that allow you to work in a wide range of roles and capacities in many areas of employment. Obviously, Chinese Studies graduates have excellent chances in all those areas where a good knowledge of Mandarin and intercultural competence are essential.

Recent graduates have entered teaching at the secondary level, where Chinese language and culture is becoming increasingly popular, or found employment in the global logistics business, tourism, the foreign service of their home country or as translators or interpreters. Some graduates have relocated to China and set up their own businesses there.

Many graduates have successfully applied for postgraduate study in various subjects at prestigious universities in the UK and abroad.
