About Biochemistry, BSc - at University of Nottingham

The teaching of this degree course is mainly carried out by the Biochemistry Teaching Group of the School of Biomedical Sciences, together with some input from other staff of this School and the Schools of Chemistry, Biological Sciences and Clinical Laboratory Sciences (Division of Genetics).

The first year of this course comprises biochemistry, genetics, cell biology and chemistry, together with options chosen from other biological topics. In the second and third years students follow core courses in biochemistry, including practical modules, together with a range of optional courses in neuroscience, genetics, biology and chemistry. The third year includes a two-semester in-depth research project.

Year 1
Theory and Practical modules in Cell Structure and Metabolism and Genes and Cellular Control including proteins, enzymes, energy transduction, transport and movement, DNA and RNA structure and function, gene expression, genetic analysis and genome organisation, control of cellular processes and reactions. Introductory chemistry modules (physical, inorganic, organic and practical). Optional modules chosen from Introduction to Human Genetics, Whole Organism Zoology, Practical Animal Sciences, Microbiology, Introductory Physiology & Pharmacology, Plant Science, Physiological Zoology, Principles of Ecology and Evolution.

Year 2
Protein and Gene Function, including cytoskeletal and contractile proteins, enzymology, gene organisation and function, DNA structure, chromatin/chromosome structure, replication, transcription and translation, gene cloning; Extracellular Signals and Metabolic Regulation, including receptors and second messengers, hormones, growth factors and neurotransmitters, metabolic regulation and integration, HMGCoA reductase * a case study. Laboratory Analysis of Proteins and Enzymes, Practical Gene Cloning. Optional modules chosen from different aspects of organic and physical chemistry, Molecular & Developmental Neurobiology, Cell Excitation, Basic Molecular Pharmacology, Biometry, Human Molecular Genetics, Autonomic Neuropharmacology, Physiol & Pharmacol of CNS, Neuroendocrinology, Sensory Neurobiology, Bacterial Genes & Development, Fundamentals of Molecular Evolution.

Year 3
Research Project, Biochemistry of Disease, Data Analysis, Advanced Gene Cloning, Biochemistry of Development, Immunochemistry, Biochemistry of Cancer, Membrane Biochemistry, Movement and Stress, Clinical Chemistry, Signal Transduction. Optional modules in selected areas of chemistry, bioinformatics, neuroscience, genetics and sports medicine.
