About Product Design Engineering, BEng (Hons) - at University of Glasgow
This programme creates design engineers whose strength lies in their capacity for creative synthesis and the development and design management of engineering and consumer products.
What will I study? This degree programme integrates the science of engineering with the activity of designing. This includes psychological, perceptual and cultural issues, and an understanding of the role of the design engineer in society which provides a context for detailed study.
You will study core mechanical engineering subjects in the first two years of the degree, complemented by design studies providing a grounding in essential design and communication skills, the design process and creative management of project briefs. The third year develops and integrates the application of theory through structured projects. The relationship between the degree programme and industry is strong and we try to maximise the opportunities to work with industry during the studio programme.
In the final year of the BEng students propose a programme of individual product development and prototyping leading to concept and detailed design proposals. The MEng degree is an enhanced programme which includes a core of mechanical engineering studies integrated with industrially based, innovative design projects and contextual professional studies. The MEng programme at fourth year level has a team project and a cross-departmental project.
How will I learn?Teaching is delivered through a combination of techniques including lectures, small group and individual project work, labs, tutorials, computing skills, design assignments, presentations and business management tasks. Studio-based design activities and studies are taught at the Glasgow School of Art.
Special featureThere is an opportunity to participate on an exchange placement in a European university within the MEng programme.
Notes- The degree is accredited by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers.
- The degree is delivered in close cooperation with the Glasgow School of Art.
- The University also offers a degree programme in Mechanical Design Engineering.
