The Business Management degreehttp://www.surrey.ac.uk/undergraduate/courses/business/index.htm aims to provide you with a broad, analytical and integrated study of business management. It is designed to appeal to you if you wish to gain a general management degree with the option of specialising in certain key areas of management. The modular structure of the programme gives you a wide range of choice and allows you to enhance your management education with industry-specific studies. The programme consists of compulsory and optional modules, with options allowing you to focus on particular subject areas such as finance, marketing and human resources. In the final year you will be introduced to the way businesses pursue their strategic direction, through the use of real-life examples, allowing you to consolidate the skills that you have learnt throughout your programme. You will have a good number of optional modules from which to choose particular aspects of business management that interest you and will fit best with your career choice. You will be able to pursue a generic Business Management programme, a more globally focused International Business Management programme or a variation that includes languages, known as Business Management and Languages. We have excellent links with industry and outstanding opportunities on our renowned professional training year. It is designed to give you a high level of control and flexibility that will help you to decide on your specific career as you progress through the programme. Its broad base enables you to keep your options open until you are in a more informed position to decide on your specific career trajectory. During your first year you will study the basic principles and tools of management, such as business environment and quantitative methods. In both your first and second years you will be exposed to modules that deal with the different functional areas of any business organisation, such as, marketing principles, organisational behaviour and analysis, business finance and management information systems. This will give you a taster of all functional aspects of business management and enable you to choose final-year optional modules in subject areas that you most enjoy and/or are most relevant to your career path. The programme offers outstanding professional placement opportunities, with a wide variety of choices from both the public and private sectors. Graduates from this fascinating programme have become government employees, marketers, Chartered Accountants, investment bankers, technology consultants, and ventured into the world of entrepreneurship and leadership. Through this programme you will gather essential functional knowledge, earn the necessary skills to be a team player and a visionary leader, and envisage the possibility of managing multinational firms in the twenty-first century.BSc Business Management and French/German/SpanishTo help you maximise your opportunities in this era of internationalisation, we provide specialist Business Management programmes jointly with languages. Your studies will comprise 50 per cent Business Management and 50 per cent language component. On this programme you will primarily be associated with the Department of Language and Translation Studies, with the business management elements delivered by the School of Management. This ensures that the two elements of this degree programme complement each other, and that you are fully prepared for your year abroad. The year abroad, during your third year, will be spent on placement in a country where your chosen language is spoken. In most cases, our colleagues in the Languages Department will assist you in finding a placement in one or more of the many companies we have links with, giving you a real insight into business practice in the relevant country. You may also opt to spend some or all of the year studying at a university in the country if you wish to further widen your knowledge base.BSc Business Management and English for International CommunicationThis programme is specifically aimed at international students who have English as their second language. The degree combination gives you the opportunity and skills to excel in an English-speaking workplace. The modules offered by the School of Management are mainstream management modules complemented by language modules covering linguistic aspects, along with economic and business issues in various European states. As well as developing your language skills to a high standard, you will have the choice of a variety of options to deepen your knowledge of English for professional, political, legal, economic and intercultural purposes. You will learn how to communicate effectively in English across a range of professional cultures and contexts, and have the chance to put these skills into practice during a placement year in the UK or another English-speaking country.
