About Energy Engineering, BEng (Hons) - at Sheffield Hallam University

Investment in research, commerce and enterprise for energy and sustainable development is significant and increasing. Driving this investment is * the Kyoto protocol * increasing energy costs * environmental legislation * carbon trading * social responsibility. This course prepares you for a career as an engineer, applying your knowledge to improve energy efficiency and reduce our impact on the environment, while maintaining industry competitiveness. It is suitable if you have an interest in developing new products and processes to deliver clean, affordable, sustainable energy. You develop skills in modern mechanical and electrical engineering applied to the challenge of sustainable energy provision and consumption. You learn how to find innovative solutions to problems by applying technical knowledge to practical situations. You progress from fossil fuel to nuclear and renewable energy sources. For each energy source you build a detailed knowledge of its operating principles. You learn to design, analyse and develop control energy systems for the generation, storage and distribution of electricity and heat. You gain expertise in renewable energy systems, including * photovoltaics (solar power) * wind * wave * geothermal * biomass * tidal * hydro. You learn about integrating them into conventional energy systems and the sustainability of their operation. You also develop * the ability to identify, measure and control key factors affecting the systems' efficiencies * skills in design and innovation to improve efficiency through technological change * an understanding of how environmental, social and economic needs impact on energy provision
