About Paediatric Dentistry, Doctoral Degree - at Queen Mary, University of London (QMUL)

This course is designed for graduates in dental surgery who wish to pursue a career in paediatric dentistry either in general dental practice, the hospital or community service or in a university setting. The clinical specialty of paediatric dentistry has been recognised in the UK through the publication of the Chief Dental Officer`s Report on specialist training. The course can contribute the first two years of a specialist training programme in paediatric dentistry. However, only applicants who meet the requirements of the Joint Committee for Specialist Training in Dentistry (JCTSD) will be considered for the three-year programme. Transfer from the two-year to the three-year programme will not be possible after the course commences.Course contentThis programme includes extensive clinical training (60 per cent), formal teaching (25 per cent) and a supervised research project (15 per cent). The full programme includes 11 modules. These are: Foundation Course and Operative Dentistry Diagnosis and Treatment Planning Growth and Development Prevention of Caries and Periodontal Disease Patient Management Dental Traumatology Children with Special Needs Oral Medicine/Oral Surgery Clinical Dentistry Research Revision. You will undertake the care of children and adolescent patients to gain experience and prepare for your case presentations in the final examination. Participation in clinics held in the hospital departments of paediatrics and haematology, such as cleft palate, and developmental disorders, is an important feature of the course.AssessmentYou will be assessed through two written papers and the submission of an original research project. There is also an oral examination and clinical assessments involving case presentations and a practical.Entry requirementsYou will need a primary qualification in dental surgery and satisfactory completion of two years` professional experience. For students whose first language is not English an IELTS band score of 7.0, a TOEFL score of at least 610 or an equivalent alternative qualification is required. The course is recognised by the relevant UK Specialist Advisory Committee as forming part of training leading to the award of a Certificate of Completion of Specialist Training (CCST). All candidates wishing to train on a programme leading to CCST must be eligible for registration with the General Dental Council and hold MFDS. Where equivalent qualifications or experience are being offered, it is essential that the candidate provides written confirmation from the Royal College and attaches this to their application. Applicants who do not provide this confirmation will not be put forward for short listing. Appointment to a programme leading to CCST must be by competitive entry, subject to the ratification of the Dean of Postgraduate Dentistry.
