Degrees in Italy

In Italy, bachelor’s or undergraduate degrees, known as “laurea triennale,” are offered at traditional universities (università) and specialised higher education institutions (AFAM – Alta Formazione Artistica e Musicale), alongside business schools. These programs award bachelors degrees such as Bachelor of Science (BSc) and Bachelor of Arts (BA).

While Italian is the main language of teaching, an increasing number of English-taught programs are available, reflecting the fact that Italy is becoming a popular destination for international students.

How to Apply for a Degree in Italy

International students typically apply directly to their chosen institution in Italy. Some Italian universities do participate in a centralised application system. Required documents often include academic transcripts (translated into Italian), a motivation letter, and a resume or CV.

Proficiency in English or Italian is mandatory. Tests such as IELTS, TOEFL, or respective Italian language exams are accepted as proof. Academic requirements vary by program but may include specific GPA or SAT scores and relevant subject knowledge.

Undergraduate Tuition Fees for International Students

Tuition fees in Italy can be lower than in other European countries, with international students expecting to pay between €900 and €4,000 annually (at public universities), depending on the university and program. EU/EEA students often pay the same tuition fees as domestic students.

Scholarships and financial aid options are available from universities, regional organisations, and the Italian government. These can help to support international students financially.
