Futures crafted with kindness at Bishop Grosseteste University

Bishop Grosseteste University

Bishop Grosseteste University prides itself on the ability to make everyone, no matter their background, feel welcome and confident in pursuing the education they want.

As an educational provider, BGU has been established for over 160 years helping students on their learning journey across our diverse range of courses. International students have been fundamental in that experience and BGU strives to enhance this.

Here are a few remarkable ways in which the students learn and thrive by being part of our community.

  1. All our undergraduate international students (plus international students doing a postgraduate programme that isn’t PGCE or PGDE) are offered our newly launched, bespoke academic support package free of charge. This package includes two key elements; first is a series of six ‘English for Academic Purposes’ (EAP) sessions, delivered by a very experienced EAP tutor and specifically designed to be personalised, rather than generic. Second is a series of four academic support sessions offered by our CELT (Centre for Enhancement in Learning and Teaching) team. The idea is to support students from the get-go, so that they are well-prepared for their studies with us. This has worked out well and we’ve had some very positive feedback.
  2. The University is situated in the heart of historic Lincoln, so our students are never too far away from the stoney streets of the Bailgate area or the iconic Lincoln Cathedral. Across from the Cathedral, students can visit the city’s very own castle, dating back to the 11th century. If it’s a taste of Lincolnshire food they’re after, there are plenty of independent shops and eateries to choose from.
  3. BGU has built a community that students can take full advantage of when it comes to support. CELT combines efforts to improve Learning Development, Digital Learning and Student Engagement across the university.

Another aspect of community are the events hosted on campus, which are always popular with our students. We love hosting the ‘International Students Meal’ where we encourage them to meet, socialise, and experience a quintessential British dinner. Another opportunity for the students to connect are the subject social events, which helps them to find out what subjects students from other year groups are completing. For a more relaxed environment, areas of the campus put on ‘Tea and Toast’ and crafting sessions – these are always free for students and staff to attend.
  4. Our Students’ Union is a fully inclusive space with a dedicated team helping students throughout their course, to experience new and exciting things, and have fun!

The SU is student-lead and independent, and all students are automatically made members once they start with us. The SU also has a dedicated ‘International Officer’ who supports international students who are settling in and can be a point of contact for any questions or concerns. “Our main aim is to represent every single student on campus, no matter who you are.”
  5. International scholarships and bursaries at Bishop Grosseteste University can help a student reach their academic dreams. We have an exciting range of these including Teacher Training Bursaries and International Office Scholarships – BGU will guide you through the process, making sure you’re ready to take the leap and study with us.
