GAD: A Unique Opportunity to Study International Development and Public Administration at UIC

Globalisation and Development Programme

Students attending a talk

Have you ever noticed these dynamics happening across the world: climate change, biodiversity reduction, endless conflicts, urban-rural disparity, long-term poverty in Global South? Have you ever imagined that you could do something to help with these issues? If you say yes on the other side of the screen, the program of Globalization and Development (GAD) at United International College (UIC) of Beijing Normal University and Hong Kong Baptist University will be the platform you are searching for!

With two distinctive and worldly recognized concentrations: international development and public administration, GAD serves as a new and dynamic English-medium educational platform providing students with global perspective and professional mindset. The well-established curriculum and partnership with international organizations and NGOs equip GAD students with profound professional knowledge as well as practical skills and leadership. Based in Zhuhai, one of the core cities in China’s vibrant Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macau Greater Bay Area (GBA), GAD offers students promising employment and entrepreneurial opportunities.

Curriculum matters

Featured with its breadth and depth of courses, GAD explores emerging markets across the Global South, from Latin America to the ASEN, from Africa to Central Asia and established realities of the global North. Converging international affairs and “STEM” studies, for example Python programming, IoT and blockchain, and Geographic information system, GAD students master their academic and practical understanding of: environmental governance, international sustainable development, international/regional cooperation, circular economy, poverty reduction, social inclusion, law, public policies, global digital transformation, data analysis etc., which allow them to build comprehensive and solid theoretical scaffolding for their graduate academic disciplines. We saw huge number of GAD graduates further their studies in the area of international development or public administration in QS 50 universities or work for NGOs, governmental institutions and think tanks in related fields.

Partnership with leading NGOs

Undertaking the role of inspiring young generation’s potential in global sustainable development and environmental governance, GAD established and maintained close partnership with “China Biodiversity Conservation and Green Development Foundation” (CBCGDF), which assisted GAD students attending the United Nation Global Compact “leaders” Summit 2021.

To increase student exposure to and engagement in national and international relevant initiatives concerning various aspects of sustainable development governance, GAD-CBCGDF Sustainability Leadership Platform” has been founded. GAD youths actively participated and contributed to the Platform acting as interns, volunteers and researchers. For example, last year, GAD interns joined the “Basel, Rotterdam and Stockholm Conventions’ Conferences of the Parties 2021” as official observers; THE WORLD OCEAN DAY appointed GAD year 4 student as membership of the youth advisory council for 2022-2023. With the mission of training future sustainable development governance leaders, this unique cooperation platform is pushing GAD students ahead of current standards of sustainable development.

Location! Location! Location!

UIC is located in Zhuhai — a dynamic sub-tropical city with long coastlines. Close to Macau, Hong Kong, Guangzhou and Shenzhen and inside the GBA, Zhuhai is recognized as a multi-cultural city full of oriental traditions and extreme openness and inclusiveness.

Based on the rapid development and huge potential of the GBA, GAD had set up professional courses targeting core aspects of economic growth, industrial upgrading, innovation cluster, quality living and sustainable development of the GBA. Offering students with internships and fieldtrips among cities in the GBA, GAD gave full play to its position advantage to help students organically integrate high-quality academic performance and regional career development. It has been seen that GAD graduates seized favourable employment and entrepreneurial opportunities in the GBA, like setting up high-tech company locally and working in regional public administration institutions.
