Studying German abroad

Studying German as an international student offers a powerful combination of language proficiency, cultural insight and career-ready communication skills.

With around 90 million native speakers in the world of the German language, and millions more using German as a second language, German is an important language, particularly in European business. Studying a degree in German will encompass both Germanic history and culture and literature, as well as giving you a strong linguistic foundation in the language.

Graduates of degrees in German can go on to a broad range of careers, applying the communication skills they have acquired into industries such as business and management, marketing and advertising, communications and politics.

Your degree will be delivered in a mixture of modes, including lectures, tutorials, seminars and group projects. Depending on your course, you may also have the option to take part in a work placement. Modules you study could include:

  • Introduction to German
  • German linguistics
  • German culture and history
  • Translation and literature
