York St John was founded in 1841 and is situated on a single campus, across 11 acres of ground and within walking distance to the centre of York. The University was granted Taught Degree Awarding Powers in 2005 and became York St John University in October 2006. Today over 6,000 students from more than 60 countries study at the University.
Over the past 10 years, the University has undergone a £100 million transformation, boasting facilities including a design studio, editing suites and music rooms. A £7m investment in sports facilities saw a brand new state-of-the-art Student Sports Park open in 2016, located a 20 minute walk from campus this 57-acre facility is used by both Sport students and the Students’ Union sports clubs.
2016 saw the relocation and expansion of the Students' Union. The new building contains a bar/event space, large first-floor social/work area, reception area, meeting rooms and offices for sabbatical officers and the Students’ Union Administration Team.

There is the option to study part-time on most of our courses (check our website for details) and we have flexible entry requirements for mature students. There are also opportunities for you to undertake a work placement or study abroad during your degree.
Foundation Degrees are available for a variety of courses, all of which can lead to a place on a BA or BSc course after completion. Foundation Degrees are available in Business, Christian Theology & Practice, Christian Theology & Practice in Chaplaincy, Humanities and Social Sciences and Working in the Wider Children’s Workforce.
York St John University was ranked third by HEFCE in 2016 for having one of the highest proportions of staff with a teaching qualification out of 130 universities in England.

Much of your learning will be done in lectures, seminars, tutorials and workshops but you will also experience group work, learning via Moodle (Virtual Learning Environment), work placements, client-projects, practical sessions and studio work. The mix and number of contact hours will depend on which course you are studying. Students consistently report that our staff (both academic and support staff) are approachable, friendly and supportive and the Academic tutor system ensures that you have all the support you need, when you need it.
