About National Certificate in Teaching English for Academic Purposes, National Certificate - at Xi'an Jiaotong-Liverpool University (XJTLU)

The National Certificate in Teaching English for Academic Purposes has been created by Xi'an Jiaotong-Liverpool University to advance the very best practice in EAP in higher education in China and beyond. It is the only qualification of its type in China and is designed for employers to recognise a teacher's excellence in the field. It is a practical certificate that will have a direct impact on a teacher's understanding of EAP and their classroom practice.

The NCTEAP is not just a training course but is a transformative experience, which encourages teachers to think of themselves and their work differently and to position themselves differently within their places of work.

This two-week course will run twice in the summer:

24 July to 4 August 2017

Or

7 August to 18 August 2017

The NCTEAP is aimed at teachers:

  • from China and overseas
  • who are currently teaching in higher education but wish to specialise in EAP
  • looking to position themselves as leaders in their institutions
  • who wish to enter into teaching in higher education
  • at Chinese institutions looking to teach more EAP in future.

Knowledge and skills

On the course you will receive practical training in how to design and deliver an EAP curriculum at a higher education institution. You will observe our presessional classes and reflect upon your own practice. You will also engage in a discussion of the role and position of the EAP professional in a university setting and the linguistic theories that underpin this role.

Themes

The course is divided into five distinct themes that make up the core of the course:

The EAP teacher as language expert

This theme discusses the meaning of EAP and what it is to be an EAP teacher at university level. It includes an introduction to the importance of specific academic discourse communities to the EAP teacher and their students, and how to deal with this on a practical level.

Classroom practice

In this theme we look at the practicalities of being an EAP professional, including classroom management, motivating learners, teaching grammar, error correcting, task setting and giving feedback.

Teaching language skills

Here we examine teaching reading and writing for EAP and fostering critical thinking in our students. We also look at how to teach the key speaking skills including giving presentations. We take an integrated skills approach and recognise that none of the four traditional communication skills happen in isolation.

EAP course design and assessment

This theme deals with overall planning of EAP courses and how they are assessed. It explores how as an EAP course leader, you can follow the process of designing a curriculum from the needs of your students, through learning outcomes, assessment and into the classroom. It looks at setting assessed writing and speaking tasks and writing integrated skills tests and how we teach towards these. It also examines the best way to consistently and fairly mark our students' work and give feedback.

Materials and technologies

Here we explore creating new and adapting published materials for the EAP classroom as well as utilising the most up-to-date computer and software technologies in our teaching. We examine the latest published materials and online and CALL resources. In 2017, as part of this theme, the Oxford University Press will run a training session on how use their EAP course books.

Threads

These themes are informed throughout by four constant threads that run through the certificate:

  • English as an international language
  • Critical thinking
  • Observation and reflection
  • Review and consolidation.

The certificate is reflective and practical and looks very specifically at how teachers can apply the new ideas to their own teaching contexts.

Observation and practice teaching

The NCTEAP incorporates observation of actual EAP classes at XJTLU. Observation tasks will be planned in advance and reflected upon afterwards. Teachers will also apply input from the training sessions and methods from their classroom observations during observed peer teaching or professional development sessions.

Guest lectures

The NCTEAP calls upon some of the best lecturers at XJTLU and guest lecturers during the 2016 programme included Dr Roberto Donna speaking about how XJTLU's business school works with EAP language experts, Dr Irene Chiotis, on time management for busy lecturers, and Eoin Jordan, who spoke about running marking and grading standardisation on EAP modules.

Structure

  • Programme schedule

The NCTEAP runs full-time for two weeks with training sessions, workshops, classroom observations, feedback workshops and peer teaching and professional development taking place Monday to Friday. The certificate has more than 20 hours of training sessions per week plus all of the other activities. Self-study and reflection will take place in the evenings.

Most training sessions and workshops are led by two or more trainers allowing for a greater variety of input and for lively discussion to take place. You will be expected to be an active participant in all sessions and will be treated as an EAP professional throughout the course.

  • Our lead trainer

Dr Tim Marr is a British applied linguist with over 25 years' experience of teaching and lecturing in linguistics. His experience in training and teacher professional development includes 15 years as programme director of the MA in TESOL and Applied Linguistics at London Metropolitan University.
