OverviewThe MSc in Improvement Science is a work based learning course providing you the opportunity to work on an improvement project in your workplace. You will study improvement science methodology and theory, directly putting into practice what you learn into making a change in your workplace.
This course is delivered by the Collaboration for Leadership in Applied Health Research and Care (CLAHRC) Northwest London, specialists in improvement science and is designed for experienced qualified healthcare staff, working both in the UK and internationally.

  • understanding care from the perspective of patients and carers through engaging patients and members of the community with the design and development of care
  • bringing research more rapidly into everyday practice, utilising rapid-cycle research, improvement methodologies and rigorous evaluation of clinical and cost effectiveness
  • adopting an industrial standard of quality in the NHS through utilising information to drive evidence based implementation and support evidence based practice
  • increasing staff capacity to implement change and improvements across professional and organisational boundaries.

What might your employer want to know?The course aims to meet the needs of employer through working arrangements with partner organisations. The course also meets the requirements of NHS organisations to consider the Quality, Innovation, Productivity and Prevention (QIPP), and Commissioning for Quality and Innovation (CQUIN) agenda in the context of the age of austerity, to ensure that cost effective provision is of paramount importance to CEOs of NHS organisations.The Department of Health driven QIPP agenda is directly addressed within the course and will provide employers with staff aware and effective in streamlined lean methodology. Some of the work already embedded within NIHR CLARHC NWL activity has become a CQUIN target and participant activity on this course will feed employer needs to meet these targets.
Tutor InformationThis course is run by the College of Nursing, Midwifery and Healthcare to provide you with both the high-quality teaching and the personal attention you need to make the most of your University education.You will learn from highly skilled staff, many of whom conduct cutting-edge research in their specialist areas, ensuring that your period of study is both challenging and rewarding. 
The College of Nursing, Midwifery and Healthcare teaching staff includes:Dr Rowan Myron who is an experienced researcher, writer, presenter and manager in the field of social science, with particular expertise in psychology, improvement science and knowledge mobilization in healthcare. She has wide-ranging experience in leading and managing research and education programmes and research staff, and extensive specialist knowledge in change theories, improvement methodologies and implementation in healthcare.

Please note fees are paid for each year of study unless otherwise stated. You will be required to re-enrol and pay fees at the beginning of each academic year.   • Hold a degree in a relevant subject*
  • Be recognised by the organisation you work for, as competent and capable to care for patients in your appropriate discipline.
  • Have an idea for how to improve your healthcare service/setting
