Course Overview

The programme will be attractive to those who aspire to become effective Human Resource (HR) managers in business and would benefit from our innovative teaching and assessment approaches. Modules are mapped against the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD) which allows HRM students to also acquire the internationally recognised CIPD Award and/or Certificate in Human Resource Management. Those applicants interested in the application of HRM ideas have a number of opportunities on the programme for community engagement and placement or internships.

This programme suits those who want to gain HRM knowledge and skills as well as become professionally accredited. Students undertake a range of tasks associated with organisations and enjoy developing sophisticated solutions to HRM problems and issues.

Key Features

The programme integrates theoretical study and application to real world cases in each module's teaching strategy but also in direct interaction with the University's external partnerships, including employers' organisations, professional associations, international partners and spin-off entrepreneurial activities.

The skills and experience gained are designed to maximise personal and professional effectiveness across a range of capabilities necessary for successful human resource management. As the modules are directly mapped to the CIPD Certificate in HRM, students gain current skills in areas that are professionally recognised as being necessary for current and future HR practitioners. In particular graduates have analytical, research, interpersonal, cross cultural communication and people management skills.

The skills of managing, communication to peers and external organisations, numeracy, problem-solving, interacting in teams, ethical reasoning, critical appraisal and self-management have been particularly applauded. Students' progress through the programme ensures that they become increasingly self-confident and capable of managing their own learning. Graduates will have developed self-confidence and the ability to work in diverse environments and communicate to a wide variety of levels.

All subjects studied on the programme are relevant to the world of work, across specialist disciplines and sectors. The skills developed to achieve academic success are also those required by employers and for study at higher levels. The flexibility of the programme allows students to specialise in HRM and also study additional option modules to be able to meet changing trends in the job market.

The involvement of employers, visiting speakers and other organisations in the delivery of the programme gives opportunities to students to interact with external networks and see the relevance of their studies.

Modules

Year 1 provides an introduction to the key business disciplines and development of vital skills. Students will work with an external organisation to see theory in action and acquire appropriate and valuable skill sets.

Year 2 covers modules designed to develop students' knowledge and understanding of the role and contribution of the HR professional, the legal framework within which HRM operates and the skills and behaviours required to manage people in order to contribute to organisational sustainability and growth. Students will also have an opportunity to choose options to support their personal development.

An internship opportunity exists which will be assessed for credits.

Year 3 develops the themes of strategy, employee relations and reward, and contemporary developments within the field of HRM, with the opportunity to choose options. Students will also study either a dissertation in a contemporary Human Resource Management topic or an organisational consultancy project in which they will simulate the HRM consultant's role developing advice for an organisation.

Professional Accreditations

This programme offers an academically challenging, vocational experience which incorporates innovative teaching and assessment methods. Students will be expected to be active in managing their learning experience, to be creative and to take initiatives to develop themselves. The opportunity to study HRM in action is a rewarding intellectual experience which also provides a well-grounded base for future career development.

The University's international perspective and integration with employers and professional associations such as the CIPD guarantee relevant and current content. The wide range of extracurricular activities, both subject-related and social, further enhance the student experience.

International

Final year International Direct Entry Mode

Students who choose this mode will study the International Business Communications module in block delivery format, at the beginning of their study time. They will benefit from personal counselling and support to establish a foundation for their continuing studies. They will study the remaining five modules (all at 20 credits, level 6) and always benefit from full integration into the wider activities of the Faculty e.g. Enterprise and Industry Weeks, guest presentations, opportunities to enter industry/management competitions or develop business plans to start their own enterprises.

Assessment

The programme will be assessed through a structured mix of assessments which will include assignments, essays, management reports, industry presentations, field study work, development portfolios, exams, reviews, and blogs. Assessments are designed to focus on employability skills required by the industry. Wherever possible vocational-based assessments aim to support critical thinking, the development in managing ICT, communication, numeracy, problem-solving, teamwork, critical appraisal, self-management and leadership.

Career Opportunities

Graduates exit with significant subject knowledge and up-to-date skills designed for the modern workplace. It is expected students could undertake HR positions where they have responsibility for HR decision-making within an organisation at operational, tactical and with increasing experience, strategic level. HRM graduates may also be employed as 'apprentice' consultants who support organisations in meeting and exceeding their HR goals.

As the programme develops people management skills, entry to the management professions, management trainee programmes in services or manufacturing, management in public and third sector organisations and self-employment is also possible.

The faculty offers an MBA or a number of CIPD post-graduate qualifications for those who wish to undertake further study. The flexibility of study on the programmes empowers students to gear their studies to their career ambitions and personal circumstances. The programme's interaction with employers, the possibility of integration of work-based learning and internships further accentuate the employability of graduates and the currency of the programme content. The integration of UK, EU and international students and a strong Alumni association allows networking and the establishment of long-standing friendships. Many of our graduates now work for international companies around the world.

Further Information

The friendly approach of the University allows early diagnosis of learning needs and support for skill enhancement. This includes respect for specialist needs. There is a learning support team who run regular workshops and tutorials in basic and advanced skill development. The close working relationships between tutors and students and students and their classmates allows a positive, active-learning environment.

Entry Criteria

88 UCAS points.

The degree welcomes those who have studied other subject areas prior to entry as well as those applicants who have studied this subject in the past. Applicants with work experience, but few formal qualifications, may also join the programme following assessment of aptitude. In particular, the programme welcomes applicants who have A-Level and Edexcel awards as well as a range of other certificates at this level from UK, EU and International bodies.
