Course Overview
The programme will appeal to you if you are interested in a career in working with young people around their health and wellbeing needs.
You may be a volunteer in a local community group, already working in a youth work setting and wanting to add to your skills and knowledge.
The Certificate of Higher Education in Young People's Health and Wellbeing is aimed at students from two main groups - those currently working with young people, and others with an interest in entering the field. These include youth workers in both the maintained and voluntary sectors, youth support workers, youth justice workers, teachers, school staff and school medical practitioners.
Key Features
The programme is available full time and part time and provides students with an understanding of young people's health and wellbeing and equips students with the necessary skills to support them to the point of signposting or referring to a specialist service.
The programme is designed to raise awareness of health and wellbeing and the issues that affect the lives of some young people.
It will explore how to develop the students practice to support issues which include fitness, being health and wellbeing (including sexual health, drugs and alcohol misuse and obesity) in addition to the spiritual needs of young people. This will include gaining skills in how to work with young people on an individual basis and in groups, and how to plan, deliver and evaluate these sessions from a non-formal education and informal learning approach.
If you are interested in the lives of young people and in making a difference to their wellbeing then this course should appeal to you.
Modules
'Young People in Focus' introduces students to the issues faced by young people in contemporary society including sexual health, drugs and alcohol misuse, self-harm and eating disorders;you will also study ?Health and Wellbeing', which explores the practical responses appropriate to some of the above needs and why the UK is falling behind in comparison with other countries.
The third module is an innovative one which enables students to engage in practical activities and build confidence and ability in the planning, delivery and evaluation of short health based sessions based upon the needs of young people.
The final module provides students with an opportunity to apply prior learning to improve their practice by identifying a gap or an interest in their provision, or an area or interest where a health/wellbeing resource is required.
