About Physics with Astronomy at University of Nottingham

The School of Physics & Astronomy is located on the University of Nottingham's beautiful 330-acre parkland campus, which also incorporates halls of residence, extensive sports facilities, shops, cafes etc. In this very pleasant working environment, we offer the opportunity to study degree-level Physics in a vibrant, internationally-renowned, Nobel Prize winning centre for teaching and research.

The modular structure of our degree programmes means that the School of Physics & Astronomy can offer a range of degrees that draw on the scientific expertise of the School. Degrees are offered to both BSc (3-year) and MSci (4-year) level and include:

  • Physics

  • Physics with Astronomy

  • Physics with Medical Physics

  • Physics with a European Language

  • Physics with Theoretical Physics

  • Physics with Theoretical Astrophysics

  • Mathematical Physics

  • Chemistry and Molecular Physics

The School feels it is important to treat all students as individuals so there are regular meetings with a personal academic tutor to provide both academic and pastoral support and an individual, caring approach. Students learn about Physics at the frontiers through project work and a wide range of specialised options, all taught by experienced pioneers in their research field. Our Physics-based degrees contain a significant proportion of 'synoptic' modules which are designed to help students to understand how the diverse areas of physics that they have studied fit together to form the overall picture of Physics in the 21st century. In addition to the traditional lecture-and-examination format, our teaching methods make extensive use of projects, small-group teaching, problem classes and so on. These furnish the students with a wide variety of transferable skills that prove very useful in their future careers. The School possesses excellent, well-resourced teaching facilities including modern, newly-equipped teaching laboratories.

Further, the School has achieved excellence in national assessments of both teaching and research.

University of Nottingham Physics Graduates go on to a wide array of high-paying jobs. Some pursue careers in subjects directly related to Physics: around 25% go on to study for PhD and other higher-level qualifications. A similar number go into traditional Physics-based careers in industry. Other graduates use the IT and mathematical skills that they have acquired to go into computing, engineering or financial services. Still others draw on the strong reputation of both the course and the University of Nottingham to start lucrative careers in anything from the legal profession to weather forecasting.
