The Clinical Education PGCert provides a responsive, work-related and academically robust route for all healthcare practitioners who engage with teaching and learning, whether in clinical settings or Higher Education institutions. The programme equips individuals to become exceptional education practitioners. It will strengthen your insights into the evidence-base which underpins the education and assessment of the next generation of clinical practitioners in your practice area.
The programme enables you to learn with, and from, a range of healthcare and healthcare-related professions; each cohort attracts up to 11 different professions. It is centered on research and learning for the healthcare workplace. We encourage you to make critical and creative connections between policy, educational theory and your own and your learners' practice.
This part-time programme will particularly suit professionals who want to gain a postgraduate qualification whilst working.
More information
The programme provides research-led teaching and coaching from a highly experienced, interdisciplinary team of expert tutors. These are drawn from the Faculty of Medicine and Health, Health Education England Yorkshire and the Humber, the School of Education, and practitioners from NHS Trusts.
This is a part-time programme which has an intake every year. The two modules contributing to the Postgraduate Certificate can be completed in a minimum of one year and a maximum of three years. There is a Masters option which consists of a further twenty-four month period of study.
The Postgraduate Certificate programme consists of two 30 credit modules at M level.
Accreditation
The Clinical Education PGCert has been accredited by the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) since its inception in 2004. This enables registered nurses and midwives who successfully complete the Postgraduate Certificate to gain a recordable teaching qualification.
The programme received Higher Education Academy accreditation at Level 2 of the UK Professional Standards Framework for Learning and Teaching in Higher Education in 2010. Recognition as a Fellow is available to all students who successfully complete the programme, although a one-off fee is payable by students who do not hold a teaching contract with a subscribing higher education institution. The programme was successfully revalidated in 2013.
Course content
The programme has been designed with the needs of healthcare practitioners in mind.
The Learning and Teaching in the Clinical Context module helps you to critically analyse your own teaching and learning experience, evaluate a range of educational theories and strategies in reference to teaching and learning in the clinical context, and develop and apply appropriate teaching and learning methods. There is direct observation of your teaching in practice and regular opportunities for peer reviewing of your teaching practice (micro-teaching).
As you progress through the programme emphasis shifts from your individual practice as a clinical educator to your wider role, as a change agent and advocate for learning and teaching in a broader context.
There is a high level of support for academic and research skills development, both to help you to fulfil your potential on this programme and promote your further development and progression. We hope you'll have an inspirational experience of research-led teaching, which you'll seek to emulate in your own clinical education context.
Module 1 MEDS 5106M Learning & Teaching in the Clinical Context
This module adopts a practice-based and inter-professional approach to clinical education in the workplace and higher education institutions. We introduce the concept of learning and teaching as situated social practice and invite participants to explore their own learning and teaching experiences throughout the module. The content of the module includes analysis of various ways of designing sessions, courses or programme, the introduction and evaluation of a range of learning and teaching strategies, including discussion of the educational theories which underpin them and opportunities to apply this knowledge in practical exercises. We encourage students to integrate the skills and knowledge introduced during the module into their practice as educators, and support their development as advocates for learning across, as well as within, their own clinical profession.
Module 2 MEDS 5107M Assessment & Evaluation in the Clinical Context
This module adopts a practice-based and inter-professional approach to the assessment and evaluation of clinical education in the workplace and higher education institutions. Participants are encouraged to draw on and present their own experience as learning opportunities throughout the module. The content of the module includes introducing the principles of good practice in assessment, the evaluation of a range of assessment strategies, critical analysis of current research into assessment and opportunities to apply this knowledge in practical exercises. We encourage students to integrate the skills and knowledge introduced during the module into their practice.
Observation of Teaching
The observation of teaching is central to your success on the Post Graduate Certificate in Clinical Education. It is an opportunity for you to bring together all the ideas and learning encountered through the programme and to demonstrate your understanding of the Higher Education Academy UK Professional Standards Framework for teaching and supporting learners in higher education. It provides an opportunity to develop and try out new perspectives and approaches to learning, teaching and assessment with the support and guidance of your tutor. The purpose of observing your teaching is to engage you in a reflective, developmental process that enables you to consider your teaching and professional practice, and identify ways in which it can be developed.

Learning and teaching
Demonstrating our philosophy of inter-professional education, you'll be taught by expert academics and clinicians from the Faculty of Medicine and Health and practitioners from NHS Trusts.
Learning and teaching emphasises participative, learner-centred and active learning approaches and introduces students to a range of learning and teaching modes and strategies, in order that they can experience a variety of approaches to learning, some of which they may be using themselves in their professional lives and some with which they may be unfamiliar. These include: lectures, seminars, tutorials, teaching with patients, enquiry-based learning, peer learning and assessment, teaching with simulators, collaborative learning, peer and tutor assessed micro-teaching in the classroom and the clinical skills lab, and observed teaching in practice, practical skills workshops, problem-based learning, student presentations, peer observations, e-learning and blended learning. Throughout, the learning draws on, and makes connections with, the real-world experiences of the learners.
Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy: claim for recognitionStudents who successfully complete the Postgraduate Certificate in Clinical Education are eligible to apply for fellowship of the Higher Education Academy. The programme has been carefully designed to ensure that it provides students with the opportunity to demonstrate engagements with the areas of activity, core knowledge and professional values of the UK PSF. The Programme team includes Fellows and Senior Fellows of the HEA.
There is a one-off fee of £200 (correct as of August 2017) for recognition as a Fellow of the HEA (Level 2). This fee is waived for students who are contracted to teach on a full-time, fractional or honorary basis at the University of Leeds or at any other HEI which subscribes to the Higher Education Academy.

Assessment
Both modules are assessed in the same way and you will be required to complete each module and associated coursework successfully before proceeding to the next module.

Entry requirements
A bachelor (Hons) degree in a health-related subject.
A minimum of 3 years' experience (or part-time equivalent) in practice and entry on the appropriate professional register.
Involvement in education and training in current role.

IELTS 7.0 overall, with no less than 6.5 in in any component. For other English qualifications, read English language equivalent qualifications.
