About Master of Medical Sciences at The University of Hong Kong

The Master of Medical Sciences (MMedSc) programme provides structured training in basic medical and clinical disciplines to enable postgraduates to embark on specialist studies, practice or teaching for career and personal development. Other objectives are to provide a bridging mechanism for preclinical and clinical studies, and to promote integrated training in the fundamentals of basic and applied medical sciences.

MMedSc candidates are required to complete 12 credit units of Core Courses (i.e. 4 Core Courses), 18 credit units of Specialised Courses in their chosen Specialised Field of Study and a research project leading to a dissertation in a chosen specialty. Students are also required to attend the Induction Courses on (a) Dissertation Writing (7.5 hours), and (b) Clinical Trials and Biostatistics (2.5 hours). The full-time MMedSc programme is of one year duration, but there are provisions for part time two-year day-release candidates. The configuration of the programme permits those not seeking the MMedSc qualification to take only selected Core or Specialised Courses.

What students think about The University of Hong Kong

My HKU life - Wholesome, Fulfilling and Memorable

Shivang Singh is a recipient of the HKU Foundation Entrance Scholarship for President’s Scholars. Recently graduated with the Bachelor of Business Administration in International Business and Global Management, Shivang described his university life as wholesome, fulfilling and memorable!

“HKU provides a vibrant mix of growth opportunities, state-of-the-art resources, and financial support for students to follow their dreams. The balance between academic and extra-curricular activities, bright career prospects, and access to global opportunities have motivated me to come to HKU. Having spent the past 4 years  here, I can confidently say that this was the best decision I made.”

“I went on an exchange to the Vienna University of Economics and Business Administration  in Austria in February 2020. I made a number of friends and travelled to several new places. While I was all set to go backpacking across Europe, the COVID-19 pandemic interrupted my plans. That said, exchange was the best part of my university life.”

Shivang also participated in the IBGM international field trip to Spain and had a wonderful experience. “We studied global businesses through firm visits to listen to presentations by the management. We were able to get into the shoes of the various stakeholders to think, analyse, learn and contribute. Furthermore, the integration of resources such as documentaries, quizzes, and essays in coursework ensured that education was not rote learning but focused on hands-on learning.”

Upon graduation, Shivang is determined to focus on impact and positive change. “Although I have an offer to work at one of the biggest investment banks, I have decided to return to India to devote myself to public service through mainstream politics. I hope that every single child in my country have equitable access to opportunities that I have at HKU, regardless of their background and status. I will fight against inequalities and disparities in the hope to contribute to my country as well as the world.”

Activities beyond the classroom shape you!

Claudia Arman is currently an Associate in PricewaterhouseCoopers Hong Kong under One Firm Services, a rotation programme allowing staff to work in different lines of services. "As we are expected to be willing and able to learn new things quickly, being exposed to HKU’s academic culture had helped me in getting used to the fast working pace in Hong Kong."

During her university life, she got involved in quite a number of non-academic activities. "To name a few, I was a Conductor for Shun Hing College’s Schola Cantorum Choir, the President of an Indonesian Cultural Night, performer for Annual International Music Festivals, and a student volunteer for various causes. Although balancing my studies with these events can be quite challenging, I learned how to manage my priorities and spare time to do what I love. On top of that, I was also building my leadership, public speaking skills and confidence."

"If I was asked to choose the best moment I had during my college life, it would be my exchange program to The University of British Columbia in Vancouver, Canada. Not only did it (‘literally’) opened a whole new world for me to explore, but it also taught me life skills that are especially useful in the working environment. Skills like building intercultural relationships and not being afraid to speak and stand up for the right things; these cannot be learned passively but rather need to be experienced. And of course, I was also involved in a non-academic activity where I got to meet my beloved Canadian family: The UBC A Cappella."
