About Community, Play and Youth Studies, BPhil, Diploma of Higher Education - at University of Birmingham

We have a long-standing reputation for educating community and youth workers and this programme has been developed to meet the changing needs of the profession. The programme can be taken over two years for the DipHE and JNC professional qualification, while an opportunity exists for study to be extended by another year, including research in a topic related to Community, Play and Youth Studies to gain the BPhil Degree.

Awards

  • Full-time-two years for Dip HE, three years for BPhil.

  • Part-time-three years for Dip HE, five years for BPhil.

There is an accelerated one-year (full-time) or two-year (part-time) programme for suitably qualified people to gain the professional JNC.

Programme Content

The programme is designed around six areas of study:

  • Self and Others (Communication)

  • Intervention, Planning and Evaluation

  • Management and Organisation

  • Education and Learning

  • Development and Social Policy

  • Fieldwork Practice/Research

Teaching is by lectures, seminars, tutorials, workshops and student presentations. Students are encouraged to take an increasing responsibility for their own learning over the years, and there is an option section regarding the curriculum/assignment topics at Level Three.

Assessment is based on written assignments, examinations, extended essays relating to placements/research, presentations and student appraisals. Equally important is fieldwork performance, which is assessed in conjunction with your fieldwork practice supervisors. Students are expected to draw on their previous and current experiences of working with people to make sense of their learning. An ability to be constructively critical while working within groups is essential to this programme.
