About Media Communication, MA - at University for the Creative Arts (UCA)

Our innovative and distinctive MA Media Communication is for those seeking to extend their study of the discipline, or improve their employability in media-related fields in the UK or internationally.

The University for the Creative Arts' course features a range of units, exploring the rapidly changing media landscape and offers students the opportunity to create digital material and contextualise it within contemporary academic perspectives. Historical influences on the shaping of the media and wider cultural and economic factors are all considered.

This is complemented by a thorough exploration of the modern technological determinants that drive communication and today's hyper-connected world. You'll discuss and debate the business imperatives, ethical and political issues which are arising from this change.

UCA is one of the largest centres for art, design, media and communication education in Europe, making it an exciting and stimulating place for media and communication studies. You're working alongside students of journalism, filmmaking, photography, animation, digital media and communication design. This gives fantastic and unique scope for cross-disciplinary thinking and working.

Our MA Media Communication course is situated in the Journalism and Media Department at UCA Farnham, which has many live connections with the media industry, including internationally. Our recent and current industry projects include working with the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation in Accra, and with China Central Television in Beijing. This work with industry informs our teaching and training and our approaches to the study of the contemporary media context.

The internet has radically altered the world of the media and the relationship between media producers and media consumers. Our staff and students are very active in the global debate about internet futures, internet infrastructures and internet regulation, and some attended the UN Internet Governance Forum events in 2011 and 2012, in Nairobi, Kenya, and in Baku, Azerbaijan. We also have a continuing link with the Commonwealth Internet Governance Forum. Contemporary concerns in internet law and international internet regulation, and the live debates over issues such as freedom of expression, Big Data, privacy and intellectual property on the internet, are a particular feature of our MA Media Communication curriculum.

The study of film, photography and animation at UCA Farnham goes back to the 1970s, and the study of journalism to 1992. Masters level study at Farnham allows you to draw on this rich tradition of media and cultural studies and at the same time, engage with the latest contemporary debates about media futures.
