About Design and Technology with Education and Qualified Teacher Status, BSc (Hons) - at Sheffield Hallam University
This course is for people who want to teach design and technology in secondary schools. Design and technology is increasingly popular with pupils studying at GCSE and A level. There is a shortage of teachers in this area.
This course includes
* two years of mostly subject-based study at degree level with some work in schools
* a final professional year where you gain school experience in at least two schools, and develop the teaching skills that meet the standards for qualified teacher status
* university-based study for professional development
We emphasise the numeracy, literacy and design and technology skills you need for the national curriculum. You also develop information and communication technology (ICT) skills.
You learn to think critically and creatively about the subjects you study and about how people learn. You complete research and reflection to support your studies and personal development.
During the early part of your course you have some school experience. In your final year, you spend at least 24 weeks in schools.
We assign you a school-based trained mentor to help your development. Your teaching skills improve through working with individual pupils, small groups and whole classes.
We have strong partnerships with secondary schools in the area and many of our trainees find employment in our placement schools.
Our facilities include
* specialist workshops with a full range of machine tools
* specialist computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacture workshop
* specialist computer suites
* design teaching studios
* specialist technology room
