About Master of Education at University of Essex Online

Get ready for the teaching practices of the future with this final stage of our Master of Education programme. Building on the knowledge gained from our PG Cert and PG Dip programmes, this Masters in Education course will explore how key findings of cognitive science relate to learning and teaching in an educational context, and how this should affect your own approaches to learning and teaching.

Throughout the course you’ll also learn how to describe the stages and conventions of academic investigation, including framing a research question, writing a proposal and selecting research methods. Working alongside fellow education professionals, you’ll also discover how to adapt confidently to a range of educational contexts, using skills and strategies to solve problems, monitor progress and alter your approaches where necessary.

Finally, you will also design, plan and conduct an academic research project that impacts teaching, learning or assessment in a particular educational setting.

With practical and transferable skills for practitioners in almost every area of education, including early career and more senior staff, this course provides the perfect opportunity for reflection and longer-term career development.

Entry requirements

The content of this programme requires you to reflect on your own educational work experience; therefore, you will need to be employed in a teaching role currently, or have some experience of teaching in a post-compulsory education context, or have regular access in a teaching capacity to an educational workplace or organisation during your studies.

However, this does not limit applicants to those only working in a school, college or university; applications will also be considered on a case-by-case basis from students working in alternative organisations where an organised educational programme is delivered, e.g. galleries, museums, NGOs or other education-related sectors.

We have flexible entry requirements that look at both your academic and work-based experience as well as your motivation to do the course. There are two entry routes onto our Master of Education programme:

1. Academic Entry Route

In order to satisfy the Academic Entry Route requirements for our Master of Education programme you must have the following qualifications as a minimum:

An undergraduate degree from an approved institution equivalent to a UK Honours degree or a relevant professional qualification.

If English is not your first language, IELTS (Academic) 6.5 or equivalent. If you do not hold an IELTS or equivalent qualification, we require students to pass a free online English test.

2. Work Experience Entry Route

We recognise that you can gain skills in a wide variety of ways and that prior academic performance is not the only indicator of an applicant’s ability. Therefore, if you do not meet the minimum academic standards above, you may still be eligible to enrol via our Work Experience Entry Route.

In order to satisfy the Work Experience Entry Route requirements for our Master of Education programme you must meet the following criteria as a minimum:

At least two years’ teaching experience in a post-compulsory educational setting.

English language proficiency should be at a level equivalent to IELTS (Academic) 6.5.

If you do not hold an IELTS or equivalent qualification, we require students to pass a free online English test.

Your application will be considered on an individual basis taking into account your motivation for doing the course, prior work experience and other relevant qualifications that demonstrate your ability to successfully complete the programme.

What students think about University of Essex Online

Andy Robertson, BA (Hons) Business and Management

Testimonial from Andy Robertson, BA (Hons) Business and Management, student at University of Essex Online

“Being a naval chap, I thought that I was a broad, adaptable, comfortable manager.

However, as a mature student, the vagaries and pressures of work take priority and zap your energy, making the balance beyond work, between family and study even more precarious.

In maintaining the balance between work, study and home life, I learned that one has to set aside a period known as the “study period” and sacrifice being idle! Giving up free time simply means giving up time without purpose, a really neat trick of useful time management. And when in doubt, I sought the great bunch of tutors and student advisers at University of Essex Online.”

    Breshana Francis, CertCE Law

Testimonial from Breshana Francis, CertCE Law, student at University of Essex Online

"I am a Jamaican living in Qatar with my family as expats; we can be called upon to relocate to another country at any time. The University of Essex Online law programme fits perfectly with this lifestyle, as it provides the flexibility that I need to pursue my studies vigorously and to keep up with my ever-changing environment.

I was able to achieve my CertCE Law, which allows me to continue studying towards an LLB qualification. The University of Essex Online law degree programme has developed and shaped my mind to think like a lawyer from the start of my studies.

During this time, I can work, take a holiday and have family time as this is only possible through The University of Essex Online programmes."

Aisha Legge, MBA (Human Resource Management)

Testimonial from Aisha Legge, MBA (Human Resource Management), student at University of Essex Online

"I wish I’d started my MBA years ago. I feel like I’m part of a community. I created a WhatsApp group for students based in the UAE and we physically meet up regularly. If I can’t watch any lectures live because of the time difference I can watch them on demand and our tutors try to be flexible with their office hours.

Even though we’re miles away from the Essex team, they’re always willing and able to help with any issues or questions I have. My student adviser, Marie, replies promptly, is always able to assist me and offers support in my studies.

My hope is that my MBA will help with career advancement and open doors to opportunities with potential employers in the future."
