BEng Civil Engineering at Keele prepares you to design, build, and maintain the infrastructure that keeps society running. From sustainable transport networks and climate-resilient cities to renewable energy systems and water supply, you’ll gain the skills to tackle real-world challenges, combining technical knowledge, creativity, and problem-solving to shape a more sustainable and resilient future.
Why study Civil Engineering at Keele University?
Civil engineering addresses the world’s most pressing infrastructure challenges: safe and reliable water supplies, climate-resilient cities, sustainable transport networks, renewable energy systems, and the preservation of our built and natural environments. Combining science, creativity, and problem-solving, Civil Engineers design, construct, and maintain the systems and structures that underpin society. Every project offers the chance to improve lives and contribute to a sustainable, resilient future.
This programme is designed to support your development as a professional engineer. You’ll begin with Engineering Fundamentals, gaining the scientific and technical knowledge to tackle complex problems. Alongside this, Engineering Skills will strengthen your practical ability through labs, workshops, and training in communication and project management. Engineering Simulation and Mathematics will then help you apply advanced analysis and modelling techniques, allowing you to understand and present engineering concepts with precision.
Specialist civil engineering study begins with structural analysis, soil mechanics, and fluid mechanics, alongside early exploration of sustainability and digital engineering methods. As you progress, you will learn to address complex applications, including system performance, construction technology, and modelling with building information modelling (BIM) and geographic information systems (GIS). In your final year, you will integrate your knowledge to tackle sustainability and circular economy challenges, explore innovations in structural health monitoring, smart infrastructure, flood and coastal resilience, and low-carbon construction materials, while developing leadership, teamwork, communication, and research skills through an individual research dissertation and a collaborative industry-led design project.
Located in the West Midlands, a region renowned for engineering and manufacturing excellence – the programme draws on a strong industrial base. You’ll benefit from industry-informed teaching, networking opportunities, and access to practical experience through local partnerships and initiatives. Professional practice is embedded throughout, preparing you for the workplace with skills in teamwork, ethics and communication. You’ll also grow personally through Professional Challenge Projects based on real industry scenarios – giving you the chance to apply your learning and stand out in a competitive engineering landscape.
With an emphasis on professional skills, we’ll support your seamless transition into practice, whether through a work placement, international year, secondment, or finding graduate roles in industry. You can also continue your studies at MEng level for an enhanced degree title.
